How to Curate a Gallery Wall in Your Home

Bold Presentation

In conjunction with other photography studios, I contributed to the Redfin blog. Given that they are a leading real estate website, dynamic images of homes and lifestyle are important to their clientele. Although they target people searching for a new home, they also provide resources on their blog for new homeowners now enjoying and setting up their new living space.

Curate a Gallery for Home

With this in mind, they reached out to photographers to give them some content about presenting photos in your home. Hanging photos is not a novel idea, however, there are many new options that update this decorating tradition. Regardless of your camera, these are available to you directly from print labs. Of course, I hope you would contact me to provide awesome images for your walls, but these options can be made from your smartphone! To see the article, here is the link on their website:

In reviewing the other contributions, there are some great suggestions for displaying photos! Because of our eyes being so calibrated to tiny screens from our phones, tablets, and computer monitors, these large prints make an impact! If you do not feel inspired by any of the images in your library currently, contact me and I would be happy to give you some ideas!

Cherry Blossom Display – Tysons Corner Center

Seasonal Displays

Taking a little break from editing dance photos this morning! A few weekends ago, I photographed a beautiful display at Tysons Corner Center. In one of their large atriums, they have put up a beautiful display that is coordinated with the National Cherry Blossom Festival. With the trees just days away from their peak bloom, this is an especially good time to write about the activation. At this time, they feature a colorful cut-paper display that spans both levels of the mall.

At the bottom, there is a large case that holds an amazing art piece made with different pieces of colored paper. The artist has cut the paper into the silhouetted shapes of popular destinations in Washington, DC including the Washington Monument, the National Cathedral, the Smithsonian Castle, etc. In addition, there are also representations of the Tysons Corner area with new, towering buildings that are currently under construction that are scheduled to be opened this year.

Surrounding the display case are large pots with real trees that stretch to the overhead skylight. On the trees are more paper crafts with representations of cherry blossoms. If you are walking towards the display from one of the mall corridors, the blooms look real! This is probably the stage of the blooms at this point. They are just starting to pop out, but not the full light pink blossoms of the peak.

From the floor above, there are very large paper fish hanging from the ceiling. In the light, airy section of the mall, they move slightly with the passing current of air. It makes a peaceful marker for the larger display below. Again using the fisheye lens, it is possible to get a view of the entire area from upstairs. The trees, paper craft display case, and the bending benches, it is a unique representation of the Japanese cherry blossom trees planted around the Tidal Basin in downtown Washington, DC. Maybe next week the peak blooms themselves will show up on the blog!

Canvas Prints – Tech Thursday

©TimeLine Media - hanging prints in living room

For customers visiting the new TimeLine Media proofing website, I try to give lots of options for displaying your photos. For hanging on the wall, I prefer canvas prints compared to framed paper prints. The presentation of the image is very modern. Without the frame or matting, there is no other decoration surrounding the canvas. The wall that the canvas is hanging on becomes the backdrop, helping to pop the image even more. Here is an example of a display of prints in the living room:

Printing on Canvas

These four prints are each 20 x 20 in size. As a recommendation I would not hang any image smaller than 11 x 14 on the wall. Many think that an 8 x 10 is sufficient, but for me, it would be too small to appreciate anywhere but up close. The larger prints allow the images to be a focal point in the room as soon as one enters. On the website, I do offer 8 x 10 canvas prints in case it will hang in a small space, or hallway, or if you want to put a collection of them together against a wall. I would be happy to discuss with you about how displaying your prints as a single or collection would work for your wall space. I enjoy working on a collection like this one in a while.

Additionally, here are some detail images of these prints. They arrive well-packed from the lab to your home ready-to-hang! They are mounted with a wall hanger and bumpers on the back of the print to prevent any damage to paint on your walls.

Canvas prints can be made in most popular image sizes, but custom dimensions can be made too! The image is printed directly onto canvas, and is wrapped around a wooden frame. Sometimes the image can be made to wrap around the edge, or it can be wrapped with an edge of black, white or any custom color. These were wrapped on white edges.
