Fairfax, Virginia

Today’s post is from a Clarence Clottey – Studio session for his latest suits. Similarly to his last session outside his office, he modeled all the outfits that he put together. However, this time we met at my studio in Fairfax. Since it has not been that long since we had a shoot, I could really compare the two sessions. Without a doubt, I really enjoyed the control of the lighting. At this time, I used four lights to capture some nice renderings of the suits, and to make a clean white background.

When he put on the white suit, I thought this would have been troublesome against a white background. He wanted to keep the same background as the dark suits, so we gave it a try. Overall, I think these work especially with his dark skin. He does not get lost in the background with some flags used in the studio to keep the lights from flaring back into the camera. I know this sounds very camera-geeky, but I was very happy with the results!

Clarence Clottey – Boro

In this post, I am showing some of my favorites from a Clarence Clottey – Boro shoot in Tysons, Virginia. Since I last met with Clarence, he continues to grow his business in this neighborhood with a lot of development. Although the inside of his office building is modern, and minimal in its decor, adjacent is a beautiful mural next to the Tysons Biergarten. In this case, the color and design makes a nice setting for Clarence’s fashions.

Even though he is the designer, Clarence is really an excellent model! He does spend a lot of time working with his patterns and clothing. When we get together, I always get an update on his travels. For the most part, he is going to Europe to source fabrics, and shops to create his shirts, and suits. On this occasion, we made some portraits of him around the ground floor of his office building. The balcony with the some nice open shade provided that nice even lighting for his clothing. Concurrently, there was this very unique chair that really needed at least a couple of images. Surely these will work for his active Instagram account!

Last year, we collaborated for a 2017 Aeren Waters Fashion shoot for accessory bags. Unlike most fashion designers, Nerea has an untraditional background. For one thing, she is a scientist for her day job! Similarly, her model friends that helped out with this shoot also work in the sciences. With this in mind, I was sure to stay on my toes since I wanted to be efficient with their time.

At this time, Nerea wanted to have nice strong natural light for these photos. Along with the strong colors of her materials, we brought in some nice complimentary colors with the car, building walls, and foliage. Given that this close to the middle of the day, it would have been difficult to use a flash even for balancing the exposure.

After all the ‘real’ photos were done, we took some time keep up some images on social media. As can be seen we had a really great time on this shoot, and I was so happy with the photos. I look forward to the next one!
