Gaithersburg Salsa Formation

Today’s photos are the last from the Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles – a Salsa formation performed by the Arthur Murray Gaithersburg, Maryland studio. It is appropriate that the last post of the “grungy” set of posters from that event is from this piece. The dancers, just as all the pros, really go all-out for these shows with their costuming. For this formation, though the dancers also applied theatrical makeup to punch up the hardened look to go along with their moves.

Dancing in formation is as challenging as it seems. You are multiplying the number of people that you need to align on the floor, and you need to incorporate them with dance figures. When pulled off well, the different presentation of familiar steps is really fun to watch! The audience that is familiar with many of the basic figures of Salsa had a great time seeing how the group worked figures into this 4-person configuration.

As with all formations, there are also times where the dancers need to move on their own, not connected with a partner. They were able to showcase their individual skills which are not always as obvious when they are dancing with their students. Anyone that has taken lessons will know the feeling when they dance with a pro that it is very different than dancing with a fellow student. Being able to display their technique on their own worked really well in formation. With all the colors, the painted faces, and the grungy clothing, it was really fun to play with these images.

Happy Friday! After a busy week, I am really trying to get the studio organized. There are some big projects coming up, and I need to clean up a little around here. There is more dancing photos in the future, and we just came back from a dance lesson. Overall, this helps to get the oxygen back into the brain after a day at the computer.

I think our smooth dancing is getting to be much better and “smoother” (pun intended) and the Waltz is my favorite right now. I feel like I do not have to think as much before starting a new figure, and when things do not line up, we can recover nicely without missing a beat. Looking for photos to post on the blog today, I thought about the Waltz and came across this pro show from the Arthur Murray, Gaithersburg, Maryland studio.

Waltz Professional Show

This was a beautiful performance of a dance that can be relatable to everyone that is watching. Whether you have been dancing for 6 weeks or 6 years, you know how to dance the Waltz. The simple three beats and a basic box will get you through any requests to go out on the floor.

Overall, these two took a dance that everyone is familiar with and made it look effortless as they performed solo in front of all the students, their colleagues, judges, etc. This is a tough assignment for all the performers so when they can come out and nail their routine as if they were still in the practice studio with no one watching is outstanding! Everyone was applauded their effort, especially the enthusiastic students and staff from Gaithersburg. They showed their pride in their professionals, and I know they will have many great shows when they dance in future events.

The photos featured on the blog this week are from another of the professional shows from the Fall Showcase. These are from the Gaithersburg, MD studio, and they are dancing a Rumba. After a full day of dancing other routines with their students, these two did a show for everyone in attendance. I am always amazed how these dancers can keep all their routines in their memory, when it is so difficult to remember just one!

This was another beautiful routine from these two. We have not seen them do a show together, and they did a great job on this pro show! What they were wearing sets up perfectly for black and white photos.

Changing photos to monochrome is where I really have fun in post processing photos. It is more than just removing color! I will post more about my techniques for doing this in a future blog post. If you have your own tips on how to do this, please let me know!
