DC Area Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles photos released on the proofing website! On Friday, the upload of the photos was completed, and the images were able to be viewed. I tried to organize each of the dancers by the studio that they attend, but if I made a mistake, please send me an email – Rassi @ timelinedc.com or give me a call, and I’ll be sure to correct it right away.

Professional Shows

For the email blast and the other announcements for the release of the photos, I started with images from the first Professional Show that closed out the weekend of dancing. The show was an awesome Cha Cha by the Arthur Murray – Ashburn, VA studio. It was the first time we have seen these two do a pro show, and we were impressed! Being the first out, they really got the audience off their feet when they were done. Their music selection was “Beggin’” by Madcon, a favorite at the studios, but a selection that sounds incredible played loudly.

Sometimes it takes a little while to get the settings for the lights correctly, but luckily, I had a little time when all the lights were turned back on from the social dancing for the shows. I want to say thanks also to the Silver Spring studios that allowed me a nice space up front to see the shows, and this was a perfect spot! I had a great perspective for this Cha Cha – the back lights were not too distracting from the dancers, and the timing for when some lights did not fire was VERY lucky for me!

This show is also the basis that I have for the upcoming poster contest. I will have another one before the Fall Showcase, and this will be the prototype for the new poster designs. Stay tuned to the blog updates on when those new posters will be ready to view. I hope they turn out well!

Nina and Dmitriy Kovalenko – Professional Dance Showcase

Cha Cha Professional Latin Showcase - ©TimeLine Media

What way to finish a great day of dancing! Nina and Dmitry put on an exciting showcase for everyone at the end of this year’s Baltimore Dancesport Challenge. The crowd, being very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Latin dancing, really got into the five pieces that they presented. Today’s post is from the first of the five, a cha-cha to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”.

These two are so quick with their movements. Her colorful and shiny dress really added to the flashy look of the movements. They connected with the crowd with lots of eye contact, and expression in their faces. The routine was nicely coordinated with the music. If you are inclined, you can see all of these in video form provided by Miller Productions at the Pabon Productions YouTube channel.

In the video, you will get a glimpse of me on the floor following them with my camera. Having both the video and still photos can show how differently I can make the scene look with lighting and lenses. From my vantage point from down low, the dancers take on a larger presence than from above making for better “hero” angles than if I were to shoot them standing, being on their same level.

It was really fun to try to keep up with these two! The auto focus on the camera was working hard, thankfully the advancements in tracking focus has really made this a breeze from the photographer’s point of view. You can see from the video how many times my flash went off. Every single photo had them in focus. If I did not include a photo in the collection, it was due to composition, or angle to the dancers being off, not to anything technical with the camera gear. Professional Samba Showcase – Dance Photography

Today’s blog is featuring the professional dance show by Arthur Murray Columbia, Maryland. These two were part of the winning poster from the recent TimeLine Media Facebook photo contest. With this studio having 3 couples dancing shows, I could not put too many images of each on the poster. In looking back at old blog posts, I found that there were a few performances that I have not yet put on their own blog post.

This Samba was a great display of the skills of these dancers! They had a dramatic start with the lady coming out ahead of her partner and dancing solo. When this happens, I try to still get both dancers in the frame with the partner that is not on the floor somewhere in the background. It worked out nicely in this case especially with her partner blending in to the audience members just off the floor.

When both of them got on the floor, this Samba really got rolling. After photographing so many dances and dancers, I can anticipate a lot of their upcoming moves. Being ready with the camera when they are facing the camera is the goal of getting great dance photos. Especially with professional dancers, it can be difficult to catch these moments, but the payoff comes with some awesome images!

When the dancers stop in an ending line, shooting photos is so much easier! This first photo was done as they were going into the line –

The last was when I had a chance to really frame up the photo perfectly. No cropping was necessary for this one. One of my lights did not flash for this, and there is more of a shadow side on the right of the frame, but I like how it gives more dimension to the faces. Sometimes, you just get lucky!
