2019 Lunar New Year

Tysons Corner Center

Last week I photographed the 2019 Lunar New Year celebration at Tysons Corner Center. Given that they had such a large crowd in Fashion Court last year, they held the event in the same space. While there was plenty of room to see the action on two different floors of the mall, there was still a crowd of people wanting to get a view.

At this time there were some talented dancers that performed some challenging cultural dancers for the crowd. From a photography standpoint, the streaking cloths, and the dancing dragons were the most dynamic for me. However, there was also a demonstration of martial arts during the show. Certainly they also have some dynamic movements, but I am not as familiar with them. Having an idea of what movement is coming up is important for getting the best images. With this in mind, I definitely need more practicing watching them if I want to improve!

Tysons Corner Center

Earlier this month I photographed the 2018 Lunar New Year celebration at Tysons Corner Center. Similarly to last year, I knew that there would be a lot of showcases set up around the event, and some fun shows to see. This time, they held it on the ground floor of Fashion Court. Unlike the Concourse where I last photographed this event, the two floors allowed for more people to view the events from above and below.

During the shows, I was able to move on the escalators to both areas. Since the crowd was attracted to all the sound and colors, it was packed soon after everything started. Surrounding the showcase floor, booths about Chinese culture were setup. I saw my friend Victoria Wu making her Mei Mei Fine Teas. Overall, it was a fun display celebrating the Year of the Dog!

Tysons Corner Center

Last February I covered the 2016 lunar new year celebration at Tysons Corner Center. On this occasion, they had the festivities in the Concourse. Being that it is adjacent to the Plaza, there was a lot of traffic during the event! Colorful decorations adorned the tables leading out to the Plaza.

Because of the loud drumming, the dancing dragons brings a lot of attention to the celebration. Simultaneously the dancers move frantically throughout the crowd. Surely this is an interactive show! For this reason, reactions are as important as the movement.

As the crowds grew larger, martial artists performed a show. Some where the same performers from last year. They progress and make their presentation faster and sharper! Anyone that came by will remember the start of the year of the Monkey.
