It was a great weekend for getting photos! The weather was so nice for being outside in late July. On this occasion, I made lots of personal photos, and some that I will post soon. We took some time to take a drive to a local spot for some different photos. I did have to work on lots of orders from these expiring ballroom dance events, so these may be on the backburner for a bit. While working on the photos I attempt to put them together in different ways. As can be seen, collages can work well for dance photos:

When working on this project, I start with a basic collection of 3 portrait – orientation photos. Luckily, it is easy to find these from Arthur Murray events. Adding the logo finishes the poster to give them a saleable look!

Archiving Photos

With the Monday expiration of some photos from the website, I have received a few emails about why they are removed. I would love to keep all the photos easily accessible for everyone, but it is expensive to buy online storage. Each of these events are multiple gigabytes of data, and it costs a lot to keep them on servers permanently.

With this in mind I have implemented and archiving procedure to still have backups for all the images, but they are off the proofing site server. I keep them up there for as long as the server will allow before I reach my maximum data usage time, then I have to remove them to make room for new events. They are still backed up, and they are accessible later, so you still can get to them, but additional work has to go in to find them in the archive, and re-upload so that they can be viewable again. If you do have some photos that you think you may want to purchase prints for in the future, I suggest that you record the file name for the image. For example this is a full file name from an event:

0034-2013-AM-SSC

0034 is the image number, 2013 the year of the event, and AM-SSC indicates that this is from the Arthur Murray Summer Showcase. If you have this information, I can usually get prints faster out of the archive when you are ready. If you know you have some previous event photos that you did not get a chance to see at the time, let me know! Arthur Murray – Spring Freestyles

The photos will no longer be available to view online and will be sent to the archives. There is a charge in order to reupload the photos for viewing. Arthur Murray 2013 Spring Freestyles photos

For these posters, I wanted to up my photo collage game. This first poster adds some landscape – orientation photos along with portrait formatted ones. Additionally, I added an Arthur Murray logo to match a color present in the images. For that reason, I picked the orange, from a dress, and the lights installed above the dance floor.

In the second, I went with 3 square frames for the images. Obviously these are all cropped from the images since our cameras do not shoot in that format natively. To add some additional interest, I enlarged the center one. The blue – green logo comes from the ladies dresses to tie these all together. While working on these, I learned some nice lessons on working in graphic design software. Especially the logo which is a vector-based file, it is very flexible in this format.
