That’s Dancing Showcase

Last night was a great night of performances at the summer showcase at That’s Dancing! There were no seats in the crowd, and the audience was enthusiastically supporting the students and staff at the studio. There were some great photos from the dancing, and I am starting to work through them this morning. I should have them up on the website to view this week.

Again, I wanted to remind everyone that the early bird sale on the American Star Ball photos will be ending tomorrow! All photo purchases are 20% off until Monday night. To view photos from both of these events, you can go to the proofing website here:

Thanks especially to Marielle and Carlos Pabon! Even though the event was smooth a usual, I know that it took a lot of work to pull it off. However, the staff at That’s Dancing is very experienced in running events. Not only did they have to prepare all of the dance performances, they also decorated and catered the evening. Continued luck to all the staff and students! I hope to see your updated routines in December.

Studio Showcase Night

Today is another shooting day for me. There is a studio showcase this evening in Jessup, MD. I will be photographing the students and their teachers performing what they have been working on recently. When they dance, it will be a mix of ballroom, Latin and possibly some formation pieces.

Overall, it is fun to show off all the new choreography for your friends and studio classmates! Additionally, I look forward to the theme of the showcase. On this occasion, the staff comes up with a theme to tie in all the performances together. Having a theme keeps a cohesive focus over all the numbers. It helps the audience follow along and pay attention to see how the next number relates to the previous.

A reminder too that this Monday is the end of the American Star Ball photo sale. All prices return to normal rates for that event. The photos will still be able to view until September 23, 2013, so you can still view and share them for a while now.

Dance Instructors

“Hold your head up!”

“Smile!”

Ballroom dancing events are displays of color, motion, and hard work. And like other sporting events, dancesport comes with lots of coaching! Dance instructors see your dancing from the beginning to just before you go onto the floor. Sometimes, they are on the floor with you – right in front of you to help you perform your best.

I actually don’t remember these few minutes I was on the dance floor – thank goodness my partner knew what she was doing. Muscle memory just takes over for me, and instructors can get us back on track in case we drift off somewhere in the middle. During the last heat before the break for dinner, I caught these few photos of an instructor shouting encouragement to her students, an amateur couple on the floor.

For me, I can remember people shouting our names and even though I can’t feel my hands or feet, I can get through 2 minutes of dancing in front of the judges and the rest of the audience with a little more confidence. Maybe I don’t remember every piece of advice on posture, foot placement, or cues to lead my partner, but I can get through it, and build a little confidence to go out for another heat.

It is hard to get these in photos with all that’s going on during a competition, but I am sure every dancer knows the experience. The teachers put in so much work to get students ready – and to convince us to get out there. It must be satisfying to see the results!
