Fort Myer, Virginia

Last October, I photographed a 2017 Army Retirement Ceremony at Fort Myer. Although I have lived close by in northern Virginia, I have never attended this ceremony before. Obviously, I was more than a little nervous since I did not know what to expect. Firstly, just getting to the event site took some time since this is an active military base. The boundaries of the base are up against Arlington, Virginia, but this is a secured facility that had strict entry procedures. Once inside the base, the biggest crowd of people and visitors was going to this ceremony, so I followed the crowd.

Thankfully, I was referred this event by a previous client. It is impossible not to feel pride in your country while attending this ceremony. Viewing the professionalism, and dedication of active service members while in their home base shows their detailed preparation in all their tasks. Moreover, the retirees should be proud of their hard work that they put in service to our nation. Best of luck in your next opportunities!

Pentagon

Earlier this year, I photographed a 2017 Army retirement ceremony at the headquarters of the Department of Defense. As a matter of fact, this is a completely new type of event for me to attend. In spite of growing up in northern Virginia, I have never been to the Pentagon except for an elementary school field trip. Indeed, I was excited to get the experience of working in one of the most famous buildings in the world! On this occasion, there was a large number of active military coworkers, and family that were in attendance. The ceremony was a mix of reverence for a successful ending to a career, retirement humor, and family reunion. It was a privilege to be present for such a milestone for someone that served our country with such distinction.

2017 Army Retirement Reception

Afterwards, family and friends made plans to meet at the Courtyard Marriott in Woodbridge for a fun reception. Not only did they have a lot of good food and drink, but they had a live band playing all night!

Memorial Day – 2013

This weekend the USA commemorates the women and men who have died serving our country. Being close to Washington, DC, there is a lot of activity around Memorial Day. For example, motorcycles for Rolling Thunder rumbling through the streets. Additionally, military and political leaders are visible at ceremonies. Finally, many families get together for a 3-day weekend. Even if they do not have a military connection, they are enjoying the benefits of their service.

The grounds of Arlington provide an especially beautiful backdrop to remember military service. Moreover, if they are family members, it is a reverent place to visit and honor their sacrifice. For one thing, Arlington is full of soldiers with recognizable names. Comparatively, there are some who are unknown to this day. For this reason, I understand the reverence given to fallen soldiers that were never identified.

Although this is a famous burial ground, every part of the country has a similar area. If you get a chance, visit and spend some time reflecting on what they have done. Above all, Thank YOU to all that continue to serve.
