We have safely made it to Atlantic City! This weekend is the 2013 New Jersey State Open. We have two full days of dancing ahead of us. All of the lights and cameras are setup, so we are ready to go as of 6:30AM on Friday. It is a 7AM start on both days, so you can watch all day if you are in the area. The venue is the Grand Ballroom of the Golden Nugget – Atlantic City, and I think the dancers will enjoy the setting. We will have plenty of pictures to share from the weekend to be sure! This weekend is the 2013 New Jersey State Open! We are excited about going back to Atlantic City to cover this event. The organizers have run a smooth competition over the 3 years we have photographed the dancers that have competed there. Each year, there is a growth in the amount of entries and this year is the largest one yet! Dancing will start at 7AM on both Friday and Saturday. So it will be an earlier start than expected for everyone attending.

Please come introduce yourself to us at the photography table. If you will be doing any special choreography, let me know so that I can be sure to look out for the best angle to capture it. I will be looking out over everyone on the floor, but will be more aware if you let me know of anything special. I may be able to help you get the best angle by telling you where my lights will be setup for the best look.

On Saturday evening, there will be more than just professional competition on the floor. There will be some other entertainers performing for the audience, and I think you will enjoy what the organizers have planned. Last year, a juggler and rhythm gymnast also performed in between the pro heats, and they were received well by guests. Come see the action this weekend! According to the Facebook page for the competition, this year’s New Jersey State Open will be the biggest yet! It has been a lot of fun to cover this event for many reasons. The first being the many teachers and students that come to dance over the weekend. They support our photography, and talk with us about how they are using our photos as memories of the event, and to help them with their dancing. Second, the organizers are very accommodating to us – we always have a nice space to setup a booth, and we get lots of flexibility to setup our equipment around the room.

They have some unique qualities at this event that keeps the audience involved in the show, and I know they will run another smooth competition this year. Third, the venue is very well suited for ballroom dance competition. The Golden Nugget in Atlantic City, NJ has a very large ballroom that is completely open with plenty of room for a full floor and tables for the audience. Just out of the ballroom is a large space for the vendors for dresses, shoes, and accessories. We really look forward to attending this competition – October 24 – 27, 2013.

The large ballroom does allow for many options for lighting for photos. I have tried many different setups for the flashes, and all of them have worked well. It is nice to go back to familiar venues so that fine tuning of lighting is possible even before the dancing begins. Here are some of my favorites from last year’s event. See you in AC!
