Needs Improvement

©TimeLine Media - Piano Keys

In my corporate job, “Improvement Needed” or “IN” used to be the lowest rank you could receive on a review. Yes it does not sound good, and is in fact very discouraging. It was meant to be a sign to the person receiving the score that they are the lowest performer. Subsequently it will likely push them out the job to something else, or out of the company completely.

Work Review

As a freelancer, it seems like I do nothing but look at where I need to make my skills better. I look at things like photo shoot setups, camera technique, composition, post-processing, etc. Then there are business things – my contracts, marketing, website – it is really an endless list. Looking back on where we are now, it would be possible to think that everything is setup just as we like it. However, I am constantly thinking it needs improvement.

I do see a correlation between my view of my work, and the work that is done by my photography subjects. I revisit many venues and events. It is easy to see the progress artists put into their craft in between the times that we see each other. It inspired me to come up with new ideas. My setup cannot be the same as the last time. It would look like I am satisfied with where I am, and what I am doing. This pushes my photography to improve every time I go out on a shoot.

Use weaknesses to push you off the plateau and get to the next level. Yes, a photographer needs to have good gear, but you need to have something in the frame that will hold viewer’s attention. For a singer, singing in key is the prerequisite, but singing something that people want to hear will bring you to the next level. More shoots are on the schedule, hopefully more improvements will be made!

Dance Beat Article

Dance Beat -Ed. 0613

Previously, I had posted that some of our photos from the 2013 American Star Ball were published in an article for Dance Beat. The 0613 Edition of the magazine started with an article about the event, and it features 15 photos from TimeLine Media! Thanks to our friends at Encore Ballroom Couture for saving a copy of the magazine for us. I am waiting to receive some extra copies from the publisher since it was a really good summary of the weekend.

Dance Beat has consistently published extensive reviews and recaps of ballroom dance competitions both nationally and internationally. With the amount of subscribers and advertisers that it reaches, it is definitely a privilege to have so many of the photos make it into the article. Thanks to Amanda and Ilya Reyzin for setting up a beautiful ballroom for good photos. The dark red accent colors against black draping really helped to contrast the lighting on the floor. In publishing to newsprint, it helps to have contrasting backgrounds for your subject. They also gave us all-access to the events both on and off the floor which helped to show off their competition more completely. I am confident that this will help to bring even more people to their event next year. It is always nice to see your work published but especially in a periodical dedicated to your specialty. Hope there are more chances to be in there in the future!

New Jersey State Open Photos

©TimeLine Media - 2012 NJSO ballroom dance competition

Last Fall, we photographed the 2012 New Jersey State Open. This event capped a busy October for ballroom dance events. We traveled to the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City, NJ. This venue is very nice for these events – a very large ballroom that is close to the hotel lobby, casino, and restaurants. Although it is off the boardwalk, there is still lots of action around the event. Dancers definitely occupy the bulk of the traffic on these weekends. Both the American Star Ball and the New Jersey State Open have been held here the last 2 years, and we enjoy the setup here.

Happily, the organizers have asked us be the official photography vendor for the 2013 event! We are excited about going back to see what new things they have planned. Over our years of covering this event, we have changed venues, and formats, all for the better. Last year, there were some entertaining performances including a rhythm gymnast and juggler that had the really added to the variety flavor of the Saturday evening show.

The updated website recently went live, so the organizers will be ramping up as details are added about the competition held October 24-27, 2013. If you will be there, let me know! I want to be sure to be ready in case you are doing anything specific that you want me to try to get in photos for you. Of course, I will be doing my best to do that all weekend, but it is nice to have the heads up! Here are some of my favorites from last year’s event – enjoy!
