First Impressions – FujiFilm X100s

Alexandria, Virginia

The new Fuji X100s was the only camera I took with me to a fundraising dance event that we attended as guests. This is one of the hardest conditions to test a camera with very low available light in the ballroom. My first impressions of the camera was very positive, but it is also VERY different from using an SLR camera. For once, I did not have to carry around a huge camera body and lens with an attached flash much like this:

Mirrorless Camera

I brought  a camera that I could actually fit in my coat pocket! I did not need to have a strap, and it was so light to carry with me. Yes, there are a lot of compromises you have to make when using this camera. You do give up some performance when not carrying as much gear, but it almost makes up for it with the ease of carrying less. The above show was wide open at F/2.0 at ISO 4000. Considering how high the ISO, the skin tones still look good which is my biggest complaint of high ISO shooting. Another bonus of using these mirror-less cameras, is nearly silent operation. Because there is no mirror, you do not have a loud slap of the mirror and shutter curtain moving each time you take a photo. There is just a very quiet click when you press the shutter button – it is so quiet, the camera has a function to play a sound just to let you know that you took a photo!

This is perfect for making candid photos. For me, I can see this being very useful since I am not yet confident as to when the photo is actually taken with the camera. I end up firing 3-4 shots at one time. As with other point and shoot cameras, there is a slight lag in between pressing the shutter and the camera responding. Although it is not long, it does not seem as immediate as when shooting with a DSLR. Maybe as I get more experienced I will be better at know how and when to press the shutter. For now, it definitely cannot be used for an action subjects. Next, I will try the flash and flash commander functions to see how it shoots in more situations. I will only take this camera with me to Thanksgiving dinners to see more about what it can do!

Arthur Murray – Back to School Dance

©TimeLine Media - Arthur Murray - school dance outside the studio

Thursday night parties at the Arthur Murray studio in Tysons Corner is one of the busiest nights on the dance floor! There are group classes just before the party to give students new figures, or to review old figures before they go on their own to practice. With the really nice weather we have been having, it was nice to get outside for an evening before it gets too cold! The staff put together a nice party for everyone just outside the studio this evening. They put a speaker outside, provided some food and drink, then got everyone to dance as usual.

The area around the studio has been hopping with new activity. Tysons West right across the street, new restaurants opening, and the Metro Silver Line in full testing for next year’s opening, means that there is a lot to do! The dancing created a lot of attention, and some of the people passing by jumped in when invited to dance!

The energy and loudness of the music outside made it perfect for some line dancing!

Editing Monday

Getting back to editing in Lightroom today to edit lots of photos in the back log. I have a few shoots coming up too, so I want to get these done as soon as I can. I am excited to show you more photos from our weekend photo walk to a new local place that could be great for more portraits. More editing is needed for those. As a quick reminder, there is an event that is expiring today, the Marsha Bonet 2013 Dance Showcase. Last chance to view and share your photos from this event!

Family and Friends

This weekend, there was a large gathering at my mother’s house. People came to celebrate the life of Liza who passed away on her 50th birthday last week. It was an amazing show of support and love from a community that lost a friend too soon. I was so proud of to be a small part of this extended family for the day. My wife ran around making sure everyone had what they needed, answered the ringing doorbell, and made room for all the food being shuttled to the tables.

At this time my mom generously offered her house as the venue, she made flower arrangements for the tables the day of and cleaned for a week beforehand. My uncle helped with the last-minute cooking, and had the house was ready inside and out for all the traffic. We had a busy day, but we did get to join the party a little and enjoy the company. Thanks also to my father, who designed such a great space to hold these gatherings with a large open space where no one can hide from all the activity. I hope Liza enjoyed watching the celebration – we all wished you were there with us.
