2013 Ballroom Dance Photography

Turning over the New Year is always a time to look back on the previous year. I had planned to go back to look over my images from 2013, and post my favorites on the blog. Maybe I would add more back story to some of them, and some insights into the images after some time that they were taken. But, I have not yet found the time to do so! I will have to do it this week, though, since this upcoming Monday is a big day for these images.

2013 Looking Back

Next Monday, January 13, 2014, will be the last day to view the re-uploaded images on the proofing site. Before the holidays, the website re-released all the events that TimeLine Media covered in 2013 for holiday photo ordering. Thank you to everyone that came back to the website to view and purchase photos! We are so happy that you found some favorites to hang on your walls, and display on your Facebook pages. We love seeing everyone enjoy the images of their dancing!

After Monday, the events on the website will be removed and put back in to the archives so that we can make more room for upcoming events. We have many planned for the year, and I am sure all the dancers are working on bigger and better things to photograph at competition. Any of the older events that we have covered can still be retrieved from the archive, but it is $30 to go back, get the files, and re-upload them to be viewable. So this is your last chance to see these for free! Please share the links to the events to your friends, family, and studio mates, and encourage anyone that did not attend, to come out to the competitions this year! We hope to have another great year of dancing and photography.

Korean War Memorial

Washington, DC

Brrr. There is a new term that meteorologists have thrown out there in recent days, the Polar Vortex! It has turned our weather in this New Year especially cold, very quickly. Early on this occasion, I had second thoughts about an early morning shoot with the wind and very low temperatures. It took a pep talk to myself to get out of the car. Parking right on the banks of the Potomac River, the wind was the first to hit me. During the walk small flecks of snow that were kicked up in the wind were biting against the little bare skin I had exposed on my face. Immediately, I thought that I should have worn more than my scarf to protect my face!

I started walking quickly towards the monuments. Since there was snow on the ground, I had the objective to photograph the Korean War Memorial situated close to the Lincoln Memorial. It was a perfect morning if you were trying to get photos of the National Mall without any distractions in the background – there was no one out there! A crew of Park Rangers was just arriving on the monument to start spreading salt over the marble stairs and walkways. I was obviously envious of their winter gear. I walked over to the Memorial, and the snow-covered statues really added to the solemn, quiet feel to the monument.

The statues depicting all the branches of the US military as they worked their way through some harsh terrain. There are 19 statues that are reflected in the large black granite wall next to their position making them look like a total 38 soldiers commemorating the 38 parallel. The granite wall was sandblasted with more images of soldiers on the surface.

As I exited the memorial, the sun was just starting to rise above the horizon. The bright orange color contrasted with the blue hues from the memorial that was still in shadow. In the cold, I moved as quickly as I could to compose and make the photos before the sun was too high in the sky, changing the look and mood from dramatic to flat. It only lasted a few minutes.

Birthday Greetings!

Roxanne and Tom - ©TimeLine Media

Taking advantage of Facebook notifying friends about their upcoming birthdays, I just wanted to send birthday wishes to Roxanne. In fact, she reached out to us a few years ago when she took over two ballroom dance competitions. Specifically, they were the American Star Ball, and the New Jersey State Open. Since she was looking for a photographer to cover the events, we were happy to step in to work for her.

Undoubtedly it has resulted in us getting some of our favorite images from the dance floor! She has setup the ballrooms to be great for photos. For example – dark and colorful backgrounds, stadium lights, floor lighting, etc. We have met lots of great dancers, judges, organizers, volunteers, and have had a lot of fun on our trips to her events. They have run smoothly, and the guests really enjoy their weekends of dancing. Thanks for reaching out to us, we hope to have represented your competitions well in images. Continued luck in the future, and happy birthday! We hope to see you again this year!
