The Peterson Companies had me cover an event at the Betco Block Factory in Gainesville, Virginia. This concrete factory was set to be demolished in a ceremony last June. Redevelopment is underway to make retail, hotel, and restaurant spaces there. It will join the Virginia Gateway center which has millions of square feet of retail space already.

Despite getting to the site very early before the building was going to come down I was nervous about covering the demolition. Given that it is much more difficult to use explosives, the building was brought down with excavators. Before then, beams under the building were torched so that the building would come down easier.

While that was going on, I set one of my cameras up remotely on a tripod. I positioned it a little closer to the building so I could stand much further away in a safe zone. Before leaving the camera on its own, I started the intervalometer on the camera. This allowed the camera to take a photo every few seconds automatically.

In spite of the obvious danger to the camera, I left it much closer to the building with a wide-angle lens. The series of photos that it took automatically, I stitched together into a time lapse video. I’ll post it and the end of this entry. Even though the camera got very dusty, there was no physical damage to the body!

Thanks to Joanna from the Peterson Companies for having my cover this unique kind of event! We have worked together on a number of events at Fairfax Corner. Compared to other events where things are created, this was a nice turn about! Though I am happy that I did not have any damage to the camera at all!

Back To School Fashion Show – Tysons Corner Center

Lord and Taylor

Last September, I photographed at Back to School Fashion Show produced by Lord and Taylor at Tysons Corner Center. This time the focus was on fashions for younger students that were updating their clothes for the new school year. To demonstrate the outfits, they found some younger models from different ages to walk the runway.

Following the Cherry Blossom and Prom Fashion shows, I had a good system down to cover these. They had the same long, red carpet to designate the runway. Unlike the Concourse by the Plaza, the hallway in front of the Lord and Taylor was the setting for this show. Thus there was not as much ambient light in the space meaning I needed more flash power from the strobes.

When the show started, the young kids that modeled clothes were very professional! When it was their turn, the kids walked down the runway, did a turn, and walked back engaging the audience along the way. So many of them handled the moment beautifully, and the crowd appreciated their efforts to model as best they could.

Cherry Blossom Fashion Show – Tysons Corner Center

On the Concourse

It is Spring in the DC area, so there was a Cherry Blossom Fashion Show at Tysons Corner Center. Lord and Taylor put their seasonal fashions on display. Similar to their previous show of prom styles that I posted before, they had a long red carpet laid out.

Since this was similar to the holiday show setup, I had a flash ready near my position facing down towards the models. Besides the earlier start, the midday sun coming into the Concourse helped to give this an outdoor, Spring-like feel to the photos. The strong backlight really needed a high power on the flash to make the clothes and faces visible.

Around the show, the cherry blossoms were recreated in balloon form. Talented balloon artists had to prepare very early to have these sets built and put into place before the show started. While the show was going on, they made balloon creations for people visiting the area. What they can make out of this inflatable building block is amazing!

After the show was over, some of the models wanted to get some extra photos. Without the pressure of the show, they were much more relaxed. In addition, some asked to have their family members get a photo too!
