The photos on today’s post are from the Professional Show by Arthur Murray – Alexandria, Virginia. Jessica is one of the hardest workers during these events trying to get scores collected, tabulated, and awards lined up for all the top students and teachers. When we arrive to set up our gear, she is already at the venue setting up and getting her things in order.

At this Showcase, it was nice to see her spotlighted during the final dances of the day! It was nice to see Jonathan too – we have seen him dance many times with his students at Freestyles and Showcases, but this was our first professional show that I can remember. Jessica is disappointed when we do not dance during these events, so it is nice to see when one of us gets out there! She also came by the booth to wonder why her studio was not featured on our posters – well, that may change at the next event for sure!

That’s Dancing 2013 Winter Showcase

©TimeLine Media - That's Dancing Winter Showcase

That’s Dancing Winter Showcase! This is always an especially nice holiday-themed party and showcase at the Sheraton in Columbia, MD. The weather outside was frightful, but the dancing was so delightful! There was a great variety of dance styles and levels on display this evening, and the instructors were so proud to show off their students and what they have been working on over the past few months.

That’s Dancing also has some new staff to teach their dancers, so we arrived early to get some new headshots for them. Since we already had the background up, anyone that wanted their photo was welcome to step in to the pop-up studio. At this time the photos have all been posted to the proofing website:

No password or code is needed to view the photos. Please pass the link onto anyone else that attended that evening, or any of your friends and family that would like to view your dancing! Since they invited us back, we want to thank Carlos and Marielle for having us cover this event. We enjoy seeing the new routines, and how much progress everyone has made. We hope you enjoy the photos too!

New Jersey State Open – Showcases

©TimeLine Media - New Jersey State Open ballroom dance

At this year’s New Jersey State Open, the audience was treated to many solo showcases throughout the weekend. No other couples were on the floor for these dancers, and they had their music selection playing for their routines. When these came around, I could easily concentrate on the featured dancers, and ensure that I capture their dips, lifts, and smiles!

This was a nice diversion from the competition heats. There was additional artistic creativity on display with their additional costume accessories. Also, they crated choreography that matched the music or lyrics perfectly. It was clear that the dancers have been working on these for a long time!

For me, I also had a positive change of pace. From the background in the photos, I have changed my shooting position. I am now near the front of the ballroom where the emcee, and DJ were sitting with the New Jersey State Open sign behind me. Before the event began, I had a second set of lights setup in case I wanted to use more from shooting at the back, or in case I had to shoot from this side of the ballroom. It was setup nicely so that the photos still had the same quality from this side without any break in the flow of the event.

This bit of preparation I had to learn from previous competitions where I had not planned for this, and the photos suffered. I either had the right position but a bad lighting setup, or I stayed where I had been the entire event and capture only the backs of the dancers during their show dances. I bring this lesson with me every time I setup at a new venue… just in case.
