Arthur Murray Fall Showcase Today!

All day today we will be at the Sheraton Premiere in Tysons Corner, VA for the DC Area Arthur Murray Fall Showcase event. It will be a great day of ballroom dancing! This is the completion of months of hard work for the students and teachers in the area studios, and I am sure they are ready to show off for their friends and studio mates. Along with the new event cards that we had printed to hand out today, we also have two new large posters to show off at the booth. One has images from the beautiful Foxtrot show by the Arthur Murray – Ashburn, VA studio.

As someone once said during an event, for some, ballroom dancing is all about the Foxtrot. It is routines like this which really makes that point! It is a credit to the dancers when the movement looks natural – like walking down the street. When in actuality it is very challenging to do! It is also a challenge to make it look different from the other smooth dances – the swaying of the Waltz, or the sharp staccato of the Tango.

We are looking forward to another great set of professional shows to finish the evening tonight. We will post more highlights from them here on the blog as the photos are completed. To see all the photos from the Fall Showcase, they will be posted at the proofing website approximately a week after the event. Stay tuned here on the blog for daily updates, or “Like” our Facebook page for updates on your wall.

Ballroom Dance Photographer Event Cards

Tysons, Virginia

We have some new ballroom dance event cards! As can be seen at our booth, we use these as reminders to dancers. Overall, a dance event is very noisy, and busy with may things going on. As dancers leave the event these remind them to come back to the proofing website. While there, they can see their photos after the event. We make them from images from the previous event’s professional shows.

We have been making these since the first event that we officially covered. They are nice marketing pieces for us, and the dancers like to see themselves in print with students liking to collect their teacher cards. I have not tallied exactly how many different cards we have made, but if you look closely, you can see that each has an identifier to let you know the series. Maybe I will go back through the archives to see all of them, and how they have changed. The latest change was on the back, where I have taken out more the text to make it easier to see the important information, and make a large QR-code for smartphone scanners.

These are only a few of the cards – the rest you will have to come by the booth and see this Saturday. We will be at the Sheraton Premiere in Tysons Corner, VA to cover the DC Area Arthur Murray Fall Showcase. I’m sure there is a lot of last minute fine tuning of routines at the studios this week – cutting music, refining where to enter the dance floor, and of course, how to acknowledge the judges at the end of the routine. We are ready to photograph everyone this weekend – see you there!

Square Presentations

It has been about 2 months since I last wrote about square cropping for photos. Now the new iOS 7 has a Square format for iPhone users to easily compose photos in this format. I have found it a much different way to compose photos in the app. I suspect this is the same if you switched from a 35mm format camera to an old 6×6 medium format camera.

Like minimalism, the restrictions by using these dimensions can open up some creative possibilities. I have come across a lot of square collection lately in magazines that have caught my eye. Some are historic photographs, especially those looking back on the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination, and some are current photo projects just cropped to these dimensions. This is a very easy composition to put together into composites:

And the square format works for so many subjects – both still life and action photos. I had to look through the portfolio to find at least one ballroom dance photo that would work well. The challenge in finding one was looking for ones that had both dancers in full extension , but that would fit in the frame without too much extra space above and below them. I found one at the Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles. It was harder to find one that worked as well as this one!
