Square Presentations

It has been about 2 months since I last wrote about square cropping for photos. Now the new iOS 7 has a Square format for iPhone users to easily compose photos in this format. I have found it a much different way to compose photos in the app. I suspect this is the same if you switched from a 35mm format camera to an old 6×6 medium format camera.

Like minimalism, the restrictions by using these dimensions can open up some creative possibilities. I have come across a lot of square collection lately in magazines that have caught my eye. Some are historic photographs, especially those looking back on the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination, and some are current photo projects just cropped to these dimensions. This is a very easy composition to put together into composites:

And the square format works for so many subjects – both still life and action photos. I had to look through the portfolio to find at least one ballroom dance photo that would work well. The challenge in finding one was looking for ones that had both dancers in full extension , but that would fit in the frame without too much extra space above and below them. I found one at the Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles. It was harder to find one that worked as well as this one!

Awards plaques

©TimeLine Media - DC Dance Challenge award plaques

I am currently working on finishing the award plaques from the recent 2013 DC Dance Challenge. This event from last month had some great participation from all the dancers. However there were a few that were recognized for their technique in their categories. Although we could not provide plaques for the dancers to take home from the Ronald Reagan Building that evening, I think the results are better now. This is due to me having edited all the photos for the event for color and exposure. The photos that are used from the plaques are made from photos that were made at the event on the dance floor or the surrounding area at the venue.

I am much more pleased with how these have turned out since they are produced at the same lab that I send print and album orders. The quality of the print is just as good as these since they are optical prints from the digital files, not prints from an ink jet printer. If you see these plaques up close, you can tell the difference. They will last much longer than ink jet prints, and have much better contrast and saturation of color. Here is a scan of one that is completely assembled.

The picture is mounted onto a wooden frame, and mounted underneath a clear plastic. The plaque is cut on the back with some holes for easy mounting to the wall. I really like how these come out, and I hope the dancers like the presentation. It’s a great way to show off their accomplishments!

Fall Engagement photos

When the season start to change from Summer to Fall in northern Virginia, we are so lucky to have some beautiful light outside to make photos. These two asked me to make some engagement photos prior to their wedding next summer. With the sun going down earlier in the day, and the weather being a little milder, it was a perfect time to have a nice portrait session. Green Spring Park in Annandale, VA is a beautiful backdrop for photos. There is a lots of green areas, flowers, as well as structures that are perfect settings for all kinds of photos.

The 18th century historic home has beautiful red bricks and green shutters that are looks like printed backgrounds that photographers roll out in studios. Having the real thing to work with is much better! Although I was disappointed that a very large tree at the back of the house did not survive the last winter. But even the stump makes a great seat!
