Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles week

Tysons, Virginia

There is lots to do before the Fall Freestyles this Friday! On this occasion, the Arthur Murray event will be this Friday and Saturday at the Sheraton Premiere in Tysons, VA. As the official photographer for the event, I am busy making some photo prints and cards to show off examples of our work at the event. We like to show off our photos as much as the dancers like to show off their skills, so I choose some of my favorite images from the professional shows at the last event to showcase our work. Here is one of the event cards I made. The cards all have images on the front, with information on the back that tells dancers where to find their photos after the event.

I will have 3 cards there as well as posters from the other shows that were performed at the Summer Showcase. If you want to see all the cards and the posters, please come by the event! Contact the studios at http://www.arthurmurraydc.com if you want to observe the event from the mezzanine balcony.

Photo Posters

The photo posters I am printing are 20 x 30 inches in size. This is my favorite large print size for many reason. For one, it is very large! Just like shopping for speakers or audio equipment where louder is better, photos seem to look better LARGER! Plus the format of the image is 4×6 just like the native format out of the camera. This means that not too much cropping or changes need to be made from the original file so it makes deciding on which files to print much easier. Please come by to see them! It is much different to look at a large print, than to view these tiny images on my blog in comparison.

Square Photo Sunday

Instagram has resurrected a trend in photography that has not been as popular since the medium format hey day. Medium format refers to the size of the film that was used in the camera. Comparatively, the 35mm film, the most popular in consumer cameras, was a small format compared in size to 120/220 film of medium format cameras. The film is 6cm in width – considerably larger than the 24 x 36mm size of 35mm film. Popular medium format cameras at the time used the 6×6 format when making images. Hasseblad, Bronica, Rolleiflex, produced a 6×6 image when using the 120 film.

There are some advantages to a square image in using these cameras. Due to the symmetrical format of the frame, there is no need to change the orientation of the camera. The photographer does not have to decide if the frame needs to be wider to show an expansive landscape, or taller to get more of a person’s body in the frame. With smartphones, this can be very helpful.

The Instagram app uses the bottom part of the screen for making options and editing decisions. The top part is cropped to a square to fit the image. With this setup, you do not have to move the smartphone screen to take your image – it is always correct with your finger over the button to take your image. Just like with the camera, you no longer have to switch orientations. Follow me on Instagram here if you would like to see my attempts at the square format. There is a mix of images taken with my DSLR, and some taken with my smartphone, but I try to keep them all square!

Arthur Murray – Fall Freestyles next week

©TimeLine Media - Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles

It is less than a week until we get back to ballroom dancing! This upcoming Friday and Saturday is the DC Area Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles event being held at the Sheraton Premiere in Tysons Corner, VA. Overall, we are excited to get back to the dance floor after the summer break. There has been a lot of dancing during that time, and we want to make more of our photos to go along with the dancing. When we first stepped into the ballroom world, the Fall Freestyles was the first ballroom dance event we attended. Of course, it can be intimidating if you have never been a part of the scene! There are sparkling, beautiful dresses around the hotel; ladies have makeup and jewels to catch the lights and eyes of the judges; and the loud music gets the audience to cheer on their fellow students and instructors.

We are also going back to a venue that we used to frequent more often. Although it is familiar, the Sheraton in Tysons Corner has undergone a lot of renovations. Not only the guestroom, but the ballroom and reception areas have also changed. We will try to take advantage of the nice balcony that they still have to get overhead views of the event. If you have friends or would like to come to view the event from the mezzanine balcony, contact one of the DC Area Studios. They will gladly give you details on the availability and cost for a seat up there. Not only will you be able to cheer on your friends, but you will have a nice vantage of this fun event. See you next weekend!
