Speed of Life – Model Shoot

Ashburn, Virginia

In January, I photographed a project with Kyle McKay from MXK Productions. Mehr and Kyle had a styled shoot based around the song, Speed of Life by David Bowie. In light of his recent death, the shoot was styled with inspiration from his song. Being that I was not available to go to the studio with the production, I did a behind-the-scenes look at them getting ready. However, I was able to setup a small headshot lighting setup to get a quick preview for what was to come later.

Mehr Bano was the primary make up artist that worked on the production. Since there were so many models that had to be done before leaving for the studio, there was a tight schedule to finish. In that case, I photographed as much of the action as it happened. The hair styling, makeup, henna, clothing – there was a lot going on in particular after the basics were done.

Small Headshot Lighting Studio

Whenever a model was ready for the camera, I brought them to a mobile lighting setup that I brought with me. With the limited space, it was one light only. With a black background, I love how these turned out. This shoot was produced in the hope that they would be published. Best of luck to everyone that helped to make it happen!

Richmond, Virginia

During a free weekend, we visited the 2016 Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Butterflies LIVE! was open in a special collection, so we made the trip to Richmond. Given that this was our first visit to this garden, we were really impressed! My uncle is an excellent gardener so he was excited about looking at their displays in particular the irises.

Flower photography compared to other genres of photography is both difficult and easy. Why? Your subject does not move. In order to get different angles, you can move yourself and work the scene. Second, this subject has great colors to work with! Similarly to a model with colorful dresses, flowers have many combinations to work with. On the other hand, it can be difficult to master flower photography. Since it is easy to see the beauty in a flower, and because they are plentiful, there are so many examples out there! To standout, you would have to have many factors come together to make a flower photo stand out. Sine this was just a family trip to the gardens, I do not think any of these are anything to write home about. I did have some ideas for future visits – hopefully I’ll get some before the flowers go this season!

This weekend, there were butterflies on display in a section of the garden. Given that this was the first time I have been in an indoor butterfly garden, it was a bit unnerving for me! Once I got used to the very thin, flying creatures in the room, I was able to attempt some photos. Even though these are not as prevalent as flower photos, I still did not get anything that notable. I did enjoy the day with the family, and that was goal for the day anyway!

2016 Spring Fashion Shows – Tysons Corner Center

Tysons, Virginia

Last month, there were two 2016 Spring Fashion shows at Tysons Corner Center. Similar to previous ones, the Lord and Taylor location supplied the clothing for models. Directly in front of their location, a runway was setup. In addition, they had a branded step and repeat at one end of the carpet.

Again for this show, I set up one large flash at the end of the runway. Seeing that the models walk quickly down the long walkway, I needed to carefully select when to flip the shutter. The recycle time of the flashes was slower by comparison to brighter ambient areas. Although the amount I shot was lower than usual, I had a high number of keepers. Sometimes it helps to be limited by gear!
