DC Area Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles

Tysons, Virginia

These are photos from the Professional Shows at the end of the Spring Freestyles. The local DC Area Arthur Murray studios put on amazing local events. On this occasion, the surrounding studios get together and give students a great chance to show off their newest skills, and their fanciest costumes! This one was held at the Sheraton Premiere in Tysons Corner. Their main ballroom has been my personal proving ground for ballroom dance photography. Additionally it has  provided TimeLine Media with some of its best photos.

Featured in these photos are teachers from the Silver Spring, Tysons Corner, Alexandria, and Gaithersburg studios. These are always the capstone to the Freestyles event. After all the students have danced, competed, and received their awards, they get a chance to see demonstrations of skill by their instructors. The entire floor is for them, the entire room focuses on the floor with everyone pushing their chairs right to the edge, and I place myself in what I hope is the best spot to capture the action! It is a source of pride for each studio to see them dance, and they give us amateurs something to aspire to for the next event.

Art and Soul photos published

I am honored to have some of my photographs of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Gainesville, VA. At this time some were making their debut in the Spring/Summer 2011 issues of Art and Soul! This is a journal of the Dixon Studio in Staunton, VA. Their especially beautiful work is noticeable in many details throughout the church. This includes all twenty Mysteries of the Rosary which line the sanctuary. Earlier this year, I captured each of these for the parish. Holy Trinity is also making a Rosary booklet from them. Also, they were used for an article in the Arlington Catholic Herald.

In reading their journal, there are many other aspects of design that are covered. I came away with an emphatically larger appreciation of the art and planning. From the largest windows to chalices and small surrounding statues there are many details to create. The task of capturing windows can be difficult with the camera. There is a lot of contrast in all the scenes, yet there are important details that need to be shown.

In this case, the vibrant colors need to be represented accurately. Additionally, the angles need to be as straight as possible with regards to your film plane. Trying to get these angles in a fully operational church building is not easy. This is becuase having consistent perspectives with all windows is nearly impossible. There are pews, columns, and other obstacles that dictate where you can place the camera. All add to the whole picture, and make for a challenging, rewarding photography project.

Holy Trinity – Rosary Windows

Joyful Mysteries - Holy Trinity Catholic Church - Dixon Studio
Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Gainesville, VA by Dixon Studio

Photography for me is usually a loud, action-packed activity. From ballroom dancing, to frantic wedding days, to sporting fields, photos for me usually involve capturing images through a little chaos. Thankfully, I had the opportunity to again help Holy Trinity Catholic Church with another project. At this time the church completed the installation of all of the Mysteries of the Rosary in stained-glass form in their parish building! These amazing works of art were created by the Dixon Studio of Staunton, VA. They create an especially meditative space in front of the window. Whether or not you are praying the Rosary or just admiring areas inside the impressive church building.

Photographing these windows presented some challenges. On this occasion, I wanted to capture these with the same focal length throughout. So I used the same prime lens, and I tried to take the image from the same distance for each. This was not always possible with church pews, columns, and other obstacles. Keeping the angles straight on all sides was a challenge, that I had to fix in Photoshop later, but the results were worth the effort. These photos are featured in the latest issue of the Arlington Catholic Herald, and help to document the progress of a parish celebrating their 10th year in 2011! Thanks again to Father Peffley and the staff for trusting me with the photos, it is a great privilege for me to work on these with you. Thank you!
