Content Aware Photoshop | Tech Tuesday

Outdoor Photos

It has been a busy week for putting in print orders – Thank you!! Some were talking to us about photos at the last ballroom dance event and had questions about dimensions of photos. This is an old discussion that photographers have been having for years. The cameras that most consumers use create images that have dimensions that are 2 x 3 natively. That means that to get the entire images onto a piece of paper without any borders or cropping, the size of the photos has to be 4” x 6”, 6” x 9” or 8” x 12”. Notice that the popular 5” x 7” or 8’ X 10” dimensions are not listed!

Photoshop Editing

In order to create those, some cropping is needed for these sizes. For the most part it means that something will get cut off in the frame. Please do not worry about this! As part of the editing process (that week where I am off social media and blogging after a big event) I am looking at each photo. With this in mind, I am cropping them down from their original state out of the camera to make sure the subjects are more prominent in the frame, and that they are placed better in the frame. This means that there are lots of cases where there is extra room where if you need an 8×10 print, I can redo the cropping to ensure nothing gets cut off, and all the important parts of the frame will still be in your photo before you receive it in the mail.

New Functionality

For extreme examples, I may have to do some Photoshop tricks to get things to work. At this point, this is where “Content Aware” functions do their magic. Using this example of my nephew riding a motorbike, you can see that the composition is not quite right. In fact, he is too far on the left of the frame riding out. A better composition would be for him to be more on the right with “room” to go through the frame. To move him back, I select an area around him with the Lasso tool: Select-subject-with-Lasso-tool

Then I click the “Content Aware Move” tool from the toolbar:

Then I just click the selected area, and move it down the frame – Photoshop will fill in the space that I cut him out with surrounding content.

In that way, I can move subjects around a frame, and put them in a place that is easier for cropping images. Not every case is as easy as this one, but if you have a specific request, please know that there are lots of options to get the final photo that you need in a specific frame dimension.

Tysons, Virginia

DC Area Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles photos released on the proofing website! On Friday, the upload of the photos was completed, and the images were able to be viewed. I tried to organize each of the dancers by the studio that they attend, but if I made a mistake, please send me an email – Rassi @ timelinedc.com or give me a call, and I’ll be sure to correct it right away.

Professional Shows

For the email blast and the other announcements for the release of the photos, I started with images from the first Professional Show that closed out the weekend of dancing. The show was an awesome Cha Cha by the Arthur Murray – Ashburn, VA studio. It was the first time we have seen these two do a pro show, and we were impressed! Being the first out, they really got the audience off their feet when they were done. Their music selection was “Beggin’” by Madcon, a favorite at the studios, but a selection that sounds incredible played loudly.

Sometimes it takes a little while to get the settings for the lights correctly, but luckily, I had a little time when all the lights were turned back on from the social dancing for the shows. I want to say thanks also to the Silver Spring studios that allowed me a nice space up front to see the shows, and this was a perfect spot! I had a great perspective for this Cha Cha – the back lights were not too distracting from the dancers, and the timing for when some lights did not fire was VERY lucky for me!

This show is also the basis that I have for the upcoming poster contest. I will have another one before the Fall Showcase, and this will be the prototype for the new poster designs. Stay tuned to the blog updates on when those new posters will be ready to view. I hope they turn out well!

It has been a busy week with lots of photos to process, but we are in the home stretch! All of the photo editing from the DC Area Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles has been completed, and the files are now uploading to the website. There are close to 6500 photos from last weekend, so it will likely take until later this afternoon/evening until the photos are ready to view. If you would like to know the instant that they are ready to view, you can subscribe to the email list at the bottom of the page, or you can Like TimeLine Media at the Facebook page. All updates on the photos will be posted to your wall. You can also add your name to the email list by going to the proofing page:

When you click on the placeholder for the Fall Freestyles, you can add your email address there. I will send out a notice to the list once the images are ready to view. I promise not to send updates there more than 3 times a month!

Going through the photos was a lot of fun – so many great images! As a team, we did have a lot to overcome over the two days. We had some setbacks and triumphs, but in the end, we delivered a great collection from event. If you were there, you know that we have a new tablet system for previewing the photos. Of course we had issues getting a new process in place to have them up, but we are hoping it will be even better in the future as we iron out the bugs. I hope that you visit the proofing page later today to see all the photos, and I hope that you share and enjoy them with your dance instructors, friends, and a family. See you at the next one!
