The photos from the 2019 FADS Spring Fling have been released! This was our first event for the Fred Astaire dance studios in the DC Area. Since this was a local event for us we saw some familiar faces on the floor. In contract to other FADS events we have covered, it was nice to catch up with old dance friends! Their dance floor at the Westin Dulles was setup nicely for spotlighting the action. With this in mind, the dancers had a high end event that they could attend locally. Open Mic Night TEDxTysons

Recently I photographed an Open Mic Night event for TEDxTysons. In similar fashion to popular talent shows on TV, potential speakers are pulled out of the audience. Even though they would not be giving a full talk, they would give a preview for judges and the audience to review. There was an initial call for applications so there was some culling before the event. 25 speakers then had their chance in front of the audience to pitch their talk.

Open Mic Night TEDxTysons – Speakers

At stake during this event was an opportunity to give a full talk at the upcoming main event this fall! Not only were they competing against each other, but there was an encouraging spirit in the crowd. Even with all the culling, there was still just a small chance of having the main stage this fall. Contestants were encouraging and supportive throughout the night. For sure, even if they were not picked this time, there are future TEDx speakers that gave their first looks tonight!

2019 MWOY Candidates – Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Earlier this year, I photographed the 2019 MWOY Candidates for the National Capital Area Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Last year, I was part of the photography team that covered their Grand Finale gala at the Marriott Marquis in DC. Although I am already booked for the date of the gala, I was available for their campaign kickoff.

The beautiful headquarters for Nestle was their venue for their candidates to start their competition. Since I have not been to this building before, I arrived extra early with my gear. I set up in a conference room that was a little smaller, but thankfully had blank walls. Rather than set up a backdrop in the room, I just used one of the walls for the background. Additionally, two flashes created some simple, consistent lighting for everyone that came through. Knowing what a spectacle the Grand Finale gala is like; I am excited to hear how this group will fare in raising money for blood cancer research. I wish I could see them announce the winners!
