2020 McKee Beshers

Sunflower at Sunset at McKee Beshers WMA

Poolesville, Maryland

For the last few years, a late July trip to see sunflowers is on the calendar. This year, our 2020 visit to McKee Beshers Wildlife Management Area was special for more than a few reasons. Firstly, it was an early birthday celebration for my mom. Since she has embraced new technology with her digital camera and her smartphone, a full sunflower field is almost overload for photo subjects.

Secondly, I wanted to stretch some photography muscles of my own. Although it was hot, humid with plenty of bugs flying around, I still took some time to try all kinds of tricks. Maybe some of these will come in handy with some future projects. Overall, my favorite with the sunsetting flowers was just taking the flash off the camera and firing it at different angles. At this time there was an interesting sky as the sun set and the light changed into night.

For some reason, I was attracted to some different images. Of course, the blooms were the highlights, but I was attracted to some other discoveries in the field. I really enjoyed the sunflowers that did not pop out – they looked completely different the others, but had a great firework look all their own. Concurrently a view from the ‘back’ of the sunflowers evoked the look from the back of a church. It was as if all the flowers were praying to an altar facing away from me.

Stargazing

Finally, we parked the car across the sunflower field. Since we had stayed until after sunset, we waited for a chance to look up for the next nature show. Above the horizon was the newly discovered comet, NEOWISE. From what I had seen from some talented photographers online, this is worth the effort to see! We had binoculars, and apps to help us locate the comet in the sky. Above all, I am truthful in my thoughts on my little blog. I did not actually see the comet in all its detail with my bare eyes. I really needed the cameras and binoculars to get a glimpse. When it came into focus, it was worth the wait!

Legacy Scenic

On this occasion, I went to the Chantilly, Virginia offices of Legacy Scenic. As can be seen, this is not only an office space but a workshop, design lab, and warehouse in one! Being that a photographer has access to look behind the curtain at events, this is look behind the curtain – behind the curtain!

For large events, I have seen elaborate branded sets where speakers, and presentations are made against camera-ready backdrops. Legacy Scenic is the company that creates these sets from scratch. While they have

the experience in creating these, you can work with them to design how your set will look. On account of the elements on a set being custom, they have the capability to fabricate what you need from small to large details. I photographed them working with the large, noisy, and sometimes sparking machines. These were amazing for photos!

If you visit their updated website, you can see my images added to their photos of completed sets. Given that this is an election year, you will likely see more of their work on news channels this fall. When trade shows come back, you will undoubtedly see them there as well. Thanks to Virginia and the team at StraTac Marketing for the opportunity to see the magic behind this creative company. Also, thanks to the team at Legacy who was very patient with me as I asked so many questions while I was there. They have almost as many cools toys to play with at work as photographers!

Capital One Center Movies

Tysons, Virginia

The weekends are now filled with more activities as we figure out what kind of events can be held while socially distancing. With this in mind the Capital One Center Movies are a terrific way to get out and enjoy some summer activities! In fact, you can get in a movie on a big screen, food delivery from Curbside Kitchen, and fresh air out of the house!

Obviously, I am excited about working with a new client. At this time, Capital One has the tallest building in the landscape with more on the way. Tysons East is anticipating a performance arts space, a Wegman’s, and other new spaces that are quickly rising into the sky. Hopefully, I can get more photos. The towering M2 tower dominates the skyline here, and makes for a recognizable landmark here.

Every weekend, they are showing 3 movies from Friday to Sunday. Donations made during the event benefit the nonprofit, Second Story. The pandemic and subsequent lock down has created a need for support. For this reason, it is a great cause to support.

As can be seen, the spaced-out layout of cars gives you plenty of room to tailgate. I particularly enjoyed seeing how families are setting up a spread for the drive in. Also, it has just been fun to get out of the house to make more Tysons photos. Stay tuned to the blog, I look forward to making more photos at the expanding Capital One Center!
