Fall Freestyles Photos Uploading

Finally, we have finished the editing and organization of the photos from the DC Area Arthur Murray 2013 Fall Freestyles! It has been a busy week with the Lightroom working overtime. There were 8000+ photos that we started with so it was quite a task to edit the images, then find which studio each dancer belongs. Photos uploading us not very exciting, but I hope you like the images when they are ready.

There are over 7000 images from last Friday and Saturday. To help you find your photos, we have organized the images by studio. We have tried our best to put everyone in their correct place, but if there are any errors, I would appreciate it if you would let me know so that everyone can find their photos. When they are ready to view, the images will be here:

You can sign up to receive email updates right on the website. I think that it will be until tomorrow morning until the photos will be ready to view, but I will send an email notice from there as soon as they are ready.

We want to give lots of thanks to the photographers that helped us capture the images of dancers last weekend. It is a privilege to work with other professionals that really do their best to make good photos at our events. We love to dance, so it is easier for us to stay in the ballroom all day to watch fellow students and studios come together. Our photographers worked just as hard to attempt to get photos of everyone that participated over the 2 days. Thank you!

Thanks for your patience in waiting for the photos. I am very happy with the lighting setup, and how we were able to get some good images. It has been a while since we have been at the Sheraton, but it continues to be one of the best venues for ballroom dance photos.

Fill Flash – Tech Thursday

©TimeLine Media - Georgetown Dance Portraits

Another dancing couple reached out to have some photos taken. They had decided to try the Georgetown Waterfront to make some nice dance portraits. Sharon and Michael chose this spot as there were some fountains and views of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. This spot is right across the Potomac River from Roosevelt Island that we visited recently on a photo walk.

We met in the late morning, early afternoon for our session. That was the best time that we could coordinate schedules. However, this is not the most ideal time for photos. I had to use a lot of fill flash to get the photos we were looking to make. Fill flash is available on any camera today to help balance the bright background from the sun and sky, and the subject that is in the foreground. If you did not have this added light, your photos will have your subjects in silhouette, with a perfectly exposed background. Unfortunately this is typically not the important part of the photo. In this case, you would exposed the fountains, sky, and buildings in the background, and the dancers would be in shadow.

Fill flash is not anything special. It can be the internal flash built into your camera or smartphone, an external speedlight, or a large strobe flash. Adjust the flash to balance the exposure on your subject to match your background. In this case, I had to use 2 Nikon speedlights at full power to get the dancers exposed well in the harsh light. A nice bonus if you get to this point, you get a nice saturated blue in the sky instead of a blown out white sky.

In the same way that students enjoy rewards, I think it likewise important for instructors. Of course it is nice to hear the cheers from your studio. But it also helps for the marketing of the teachers. Highlighting their efforts to get many students out on the floor for heats, and knowing they are prepared, is great for business! Undeniably the instructors dancing the most heats have more practice in giving instruction and working with students. Additionally, it gives other instructors a goal to shoot for at future events.
