Zoom Your Flash! – Tech Thursday

©TimeLine Media - motorcycle action photo with zoomed flash head

Of course you can zoom your lenses, but did you know you can zoom your speedlight flash? Depending on the model that you have, your flash head can be moved internally. On the Nikon SB-910, the flash head can be zoomed from 24mm to 200mm – a much larger range than their previous model, the SB-800 which had a range of 24mm to 105mm.

Speedlight Features

If you have this flash connected to modern Nikon cameras, the flash and the camera will talk to each other. They will automatically set the zoom of the flash to match the focal length of the lens that you are using by default. This is a great feature! As you use a longer focal length, the flash head will automatically zoom so that more flash power is given where you need it. Here are some example photos showing the difference in the light produced by the flash at different zoom lengths:

This first photo has the flash zoomed out to 24mm. It is giving it’s largest spread of light against the wall. If you need to cover more area with the flash, this is will cover a wider area. This also corresponds to a wider area seen by a camera lens set at 24mm.

At 70mm, the light beam becomes more focused. There is not as much spread of light up and down from the flash. The more you zoom in with your lens, the less that you need the light to be spread out across the frame, so this only flashes what you need without worrying about the areas that are not going to be seen in camera.

Zooming Flash

The tight beam of light that comes from the flash at 200mm is the most extreme setting. If you are zoom out this far with your lens, there will be a corresponding small area that you need to iluminate that far from the camera. Having these options for you gives you creative possibilities to focus light. You can manually set the zoom on the flash apart from the focal length of the lens. This works well to create more dramatic portraits just by zooming the light you are already carrying! Try it next time and let me know how it goes.

2 Days Until Fall Freestyles

©TimeLine Media - Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles Team Match

Tysons, Virginia

It is only 2 days until the Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles. This Friday and Saturday in Tysons Corner, Arthur Murray studios from around the region will bring their staff and students to show off their new moves on the dance floor. We are going to be there to photograph all the dancing on both days. After the event, we will edit the photos, then post them to our proofing website. That is where we post all the photos from our events. If you would like to be notified as soon as the photos are ready to view, you can go here and sign up for the email list:

http://proofs.timelinedc.com

I will send out a note to everyone on the list there as soon as they photos are viewable. It is a lot of work after the event to get them up, so it does take a good week to complete. I will go through each of the photos, crop them down so you can really see the subject, fix and color or exposure problems, then we sort each of the photos by studio. This helps to find your photos after the event. It can be difficult to find when photos are only sorted by time of dancing, so we do this extra step to make it easier and fun to find your images. You will be viewing photos of people at your studio instead of random people that were dancing with you at the same time.

Potomac Cup

One of our favorite things to photograph is the Potomac Cup Team Match. The schools from Maryland and Virginia pick a theme to represent their side of the river. Then dancers from each level are paired up from different schools, and dance to a song and danced picked as they are ready to dance. These are unique images that I know we cannot get anywhere else! Contact the studios if you would like to get access to watch any of the dancing this weekend. There is a balcony overlooking the dance floor so come by!

Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles week

©TimeLine Media - business card front

Tysons, Virginia

There is lots to do before the Fall Freestyles this Friday! On this occasion, the Arthur Murray event will be this Friday and Saturday at the Sheraton Premiere in Tysons, VA. As the official photographer for the event, I am busy making some photo prints and cards to show off examples of our work at the event. We like to show off our photos as much as the dancers like to show off their skills, so I choose some of my favorite images from the professional shows at the last event to showcase our work. Here is one of the event cards I made. The cards all have images on the front, with information on the back that tells dancers where to find their photos after the event.

I will have 3 cards there as well as posters from the other shows that were performed at the Summer Showcase. If you want to see all the cards and the posters, please come by the event! Contact the studios at http://www.arthurmurraydc.com if you want to observe the event from the mezzanine balcony.

Photo Posters

The photo posters I am printing are 20 x 30 inches in size. This is my favorite large print size for many reason. For one, it is very large! Just like shopping for speakers or audio equipment where louder is better, photos seem to look better LARGER! Plus the format of the image is 4×6 just like the native format out of the camera. This means that not too much cropping or changes need to be made from the original file so it makes deciding on which files to print much easier. Please come by to see them! It is much different to look at a large print, than to view these tiny images on my blog in comparison.
