2010 NFL Football

Last season was my first chance at photographing professional 2010 NFL Football – you know, the good kind :-). Shooting for Southcreek Global Media, I got access to shoot training camp for the Washington Redskins at their campus in Ashburn, VA. They routinely had good crowds for the practices, and all were anticipating a great season for the team. During one of the practices, the PR team gave me and some other photographers access to the roof at Redskins Park to get a wide view of the practice fields and the crowds –

Warmups was an opportune time to capture repeating elements in the frame with many players huddled together –

I also photographed two games at FedEx field in Landover, MD – a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, and a Monday Night Football game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Rex Grossman playing in a 2010 preseason game – he will be the starter for the beginning of the 2011 season –

DeSean Jackson catching an early pass from Michael Vick before some of the crowd even got to their seats!

Head Coach Mike Shanahan having a long night against the Eagles and the officials –

It turned out to be a record-setting night for Michael Vick as his Eagles won 59-28.

Not surprising, ESPN has great lighting for post-game interviews!

Holy Trinity 10th Anniversary Gala

In late June, I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful gala celebration for the 10th Anniversary of the start of Holy Trinity Parish in Gainesville, VA. There was a great crowd there to celebrate the challenging work done over the last decade. Afterwards it led to the creation of a large and active church community with an amazing building for Sunday Masses. Some of those attending were Anne and Ronald Dixon from Dixon Studio. They are the incredible artists whose award-winning work is on display at the parish. They created many of the windows, objects, and other details built into the church building, some of which I photographed for them here.

The evening’s main event was a musical performance by Julie Murphy Wells, the lead vocalist of Eddie From Ohio. She sang her favorite selections of standards and Broadway songs with her band in Merchant Hall of the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, VA. This space is the premiere place for holding musical, theatrical presentations for audiences in the area. I have enjoyed many performances of symphonies and other musical groups at area auditoriums, but Hylton is now a place to proudly display talented performers. I would like to come back to photograph or enjoy another performance before too long!

Don’t mess with a knife-juggling priest.

Thanks to Father Peffley, and the Holy Trinity 10th Anniversary Committee for having me cover this event. It was a privilege to cover such an important milestone at a beautiful setting. Thank you!

Baltimore Grand Prix

Last weekend was the first running of the Baltimore Grand Prix. At this time this premiere racing event was held through the streets of Baltimore. As posted before on my previous post, I have been lucky enough to view some of the highest-level sports up close.

This kind of professional racing almost took my breath (and hearing) away. Television broadcasts cannot give you the feel of these powerful engines roaring at top speed. Especially on regular city streets in between tall buildings which amplify the sounds even more. (Earplugs were implemented as soon as the first lap was completed.) This was an eye-opening experience. Moreover, I have a lot more respect for the racers that compete, and a lot of respect for the photographers that need to capture images of these machines as they whiz by at incredible speeds. The photographers also had a beautiful backdrop with Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and packed grandstands setting the scene. I hope this event will be run again next year, and maybe I can get better shots with much more practice!
