2020 Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles photos Released

First Ballroom Dance event

The photos from last weekend’s 2020 Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles photos are now ready to view at the TimeLine Media proofing site! Following the event, I had to give a big thanks to the team that helped me get through this weekend. Undoubtedly I would not have made it through without them. A couple of days before the event, I threw out my back loading and unloading gear out of my car! It made me much less productive than usual for the setup and photographing this weekend. Surprisingly, we did not have any issues – maybe I am not as essential as I thought!

The Hilton McLean in Tysons, VA was the venue again for the DC Area Arthur Murray studios to gather. In addition to the studios that regularly attend, we were happy to see the new Arthur Murray Richmond studio come with their students! By and large the event ran smoothly even with a delayed start on Friday afternoon.

We had the chance to get out on the dance floor this time. The team of photographers that we had working with us were very reliable, and we need to shake off some dancing rust. Thanks to everyone that stopped by the booth to say hello, and to check out the posters we made from the last event. I have tried to sort all the photos by studio, but I am sure there are some misfiled ones in there. In that case, please send me an email, and I’ll be sure to correct them. Thank you!

20 years

It has been 20 years since my father passed away. Like many parents that think their children are extraordinary, I have that feeling about my dad. He gave me an appreciation for a lot of the world that I still pursue today! Although I did not get his God-given talent for illustration, he did love photography, and he gave access to some large cameras from a young age. I do not fully appreciate that until now, but I appreciate the faith he gave a spastic boy with his precious camera gear!

Of course, I wish he was still with us. There is so much over the 20 years that he would have enjoyed seeing! He never had high-speed internet, a cell phone, or an iPad. I can only imagine what kind of sketches he could have made with a tablet and a pencil-like input device. Not to mention, I would love to see what he would think to photograph with my Nikons. I remember taking a special trip to a shopping district in New York City just to browse and eventually buy his NIkon N2020. Can you imagine – autofocus? And I can mount my old lenses if needed? We would have so much to shoot with my collection now.

I can remember when posting for photos, my dad was definitely ahead of his time with modeling. Unlike the generic photos of the film-snapshot days, he didn’t always want us to look at the camera. He did not want to us to always be smiling. He directed me when photographing what to include in the frame, and how it should look when it is developed. It was my first lessons in pre-visualization which has helped me in my career now. I save so much time with out “spraying and praying”.

Thanks for sharing your artistic genetics – it has helped me to build a business and opened so many doors. I wish you could have been here to help me, but not having you here has pushed me to grow up and find my way on my own. I know you are still helping me, and I will keep trying to make you proud.

Washington Dulles International Airport

Last year, I photographed an airport birthday! By all means this was the most unique venue where I have attended a celebration. If I had known this was at all a possibility, I would have asked my parents for this every year!

On this occasion, the airport made lots of areas accessible to the event guests. Firstly, we met at a conference room where food, drink and birthday cake were served. While we were there, a representative from the airport gave us a nice presentation on the details of the facility. Afterwards, we started a tour of the airport. As can be seen, the highlight of the tour was viewing planes arriving on the runway from a spot next to the runway! Thanks to Julie and her parents for inviting us to her awesome birthday celebration – it is one to remember!
