Last summer was the first year for the Fresh Artists Summer Concert Series at Tysons Corner Center. This collection of musicians was put together by 94.7 Fresh FM . Overall it really helped to kick off all the festivities at the new elevated Plaza. Each performance was an exciting display of talent from the musicians. The crowds really responded by attending and enthusiastically participating in the performances. One of the most energetic acts from last year was AJ Smith who opened of Lindsey Sterling in one of the most attended performances of the whole series. There is no doubt that he introduced himself to a LOT of new fans that day.

I was really happy when he contacted me about the photos that I made of him and his bandmates that day. It turns out that like me, he is from the DC area, and would be coming back into town to perform at Jammin’ Java, one of the best local venues for live music. I offered to come out to get more photos of the band as they played for friends, and played some new compositions from this talented songwriter. Because I did not want to get in the way of the crowd during the performance, I came during their sound check earlier in the day, and was able to get some awesome photos of AJ and his band!

They worked really well together in just getting all their settings right for the show. The band sounded great, and the lighting/video backdrop that they had on stage really showed their professionalism. It was inspiring to see the effort and teamwork they put into their music, and I am sure grew their fan base even more after this night. I hope to get the chance to photograph them again!

Catherine and Bill – Virginia Wedding Photographer

It has been a very busy summer – so many photo project to catch up on the blog! I will be working to get through them as soon as I can. Today I have a beautiful northern Virginia wedding. Catherine and Bill had an amazing ceremony day with many family and friends attending. Her brother was the celebrant of the Mass which added to the special details of the day.

From the arrival of the bride and groom, they were both so excited to be reciting their vows at the church. After the ceremony, their family gathered at the Old Town Hall in Fairfax for some cool drinks and an energetic reception. This helped them show off their new moves during their first dance. The DJ had a great setup – I wanted to dance! When dinner was ready, the party was moved downstairs where the joining families had a chance to go around and meet each other.

I heard Bill say that he looks forward to the many get-togethers they will be having over the next 50 years! As the sun went down and the temperature cooled, we went out for some fun photos by the colorful fountain just outside. I promised not to keep them away from the dance floor for too long! Thanks to Mario Brathwaite for helping to cover this awesome wedding with me. Congrats to the bride and groom!

Reagan National Airport

Terminals – Reagan National Airport

Earlier this year, we took a plane out of and back to Reagan National Airport. I accompanied my wife on a business trip. Since I can work remotely, it was a good opportunity for me to visit a new city. While I did have some photography work, I did find some time to go make some new images while there.

The first location on our trip was not far from home. Reagan National is the closest airport to downtown Washington, DC. During the time from checking in with the airline and boarding, the airport has a lot of possibilities to make architecture photos. The largest and most popular photos are made in the main terminal with its Jeffersonian Domes and long promenade.

Additionally, there is another great spot in the former Terminal A. Now, this section is a Conference Center and Historic Lobby as it no longer functions as a place for passengers to board airplanes. I have photographed some events in this space which is a showcase area for the DC area.

The large panoramic window provides a beautiful view of the airfield, the Potomac River, and shores of Maryland. Who doesn’t enjoy viewing planes as they take off or land? Maybe it heightens the anxiety for nervous flyers – lol!

On the flight back from the trip the good weather provided more opportunities for photos out of the window. The challenging approach to the airport follows the path of the Potomac River. On one side you may see the familiar sites of Washington, DC from the air, but this side I had view of Tysons, Arlington, and the Pentagon in Virginia.

All of these are so familiar to me from the ground but are really photo worthy from above. The fleeting time that you have above the area makes you hit the camera trigger much faster knowing there is no time to review them. It’s really time to spray and pray!
