Throwback Thursday – TV

“Don’t kill the messenger!”

The form of the “messenger” is ever changing especially in the information age. Although it is usually not a person that you meet face to face, it is usually a screen. For a long time now, our messenger has been behemoth of screen not in terms of size, but in weight and girth – an old Sony XBR CRT TV. This thing was state of the art in Y2K! It had a “flat” screen not that it’s enclosure was small, but that the glass screen in front was no longer bulbous. Thus, giving the picture a much truer perspective for viewers.

This was our first major purchase after we moved into our new house. Emphatically, it became a focal point for our living room. We painted the room a dark red color, we installed black-out shades. Its 4:3 aspect ratio picture was BEAUTIFUL! We paired it with speakers to fill the room with all the chirps, beeps, and booms from the best DVDs. We hosted movie nights, and enjoyed using the technology to bring friends together. Moreover we see films more closely as they were intended by creators.

From other broadcast programming, we were able to witness many important events – presidential elections, inspiring musical performances, 9/11/2001, amazing athletic wins by our college football team, crushing losses by our professional team, and even some of our own creations – old home movies updated to be shared before they are lost.

But technology marches on, and it is finally time to upgrade. The front of the TV has many scars from the few times we have moved it – only once did we change its room, and that was only when the house was changed too. The power button barely has any coating left from all of its use! We were going to wait until the TV would no longer work. All the new movies and TV shows were wide screen, and all the new connections for streaming content from the internet could not be connected due to technical reasons. But we held on to it for almost 15 years. We only hope the new messenger does the job half as well as its predecessor.

2015 Maryland Dancesport Championships photos expiring!

Baltimore, Maryland

I really feel bad for neglecting the blog! During this time, I have been busy with shoots, travel, and catching up to get these photos out. Before I head out for more photos, I wanted to get a post out about the Maryland Dancesport Championships. Next Monday, June 15, 2015 will be the last day that you can view these photos on the TimeLine Media proofing site here:

It was our first time covering this event for Amanda and Ilya Reyzin. Previously, they have had us cover other events for them. We were excited about going to a new venue! Additionally, we were happy to see so many familiar faces out on the floor! Being closer to our home base, we had a nice time bringing more of our familiar assistants with us to help get more of the action captured.

As with the other events that they organize, the Reyzins went all-out in their ballroom decorations and technology use to enhance the experience for attendants. They had a huge 4k screen behind the dais that showed clips from movies, past competitions, and graphics of the local Baltimore area. It made a great backdrop for the photos from the opposite end of the floor, and really became another character in the images. My photographers and I used this to get more interesting compositions, and we were lucky in lots of cases. It was such a high resolution screen that it did not become distracting or a blurry mess as previous screens I have seen.

Other than the décor, we were really welcomed nicely by the dancers that visited the booth to preview their photos. We had all the tablets out and viewed images all weekend with people that found us in the back corner. Thanks for stopping by to say hello! We enjoy making these photos, and we hope to see you at another event soon. Our next event on the calendar is the DC Area Arthur Murray Summer Showcase. From what I have seen around the studio, there are many people refining their routines as the date is closing in fast! See you there!

2015 Prom Fashion Show

Earlier this Spring, Lord and Taylor produced a 2015 Prom Fashion Show outside their storefront at Tysons Corner Center. The show was co-sponsored by Karin’s Florist in Vienna, Virginia. A pairing of fashion and flowery accessories – it really feels like prom! The first part of the shoot was against a nice dark gray background that was setup for the traditionally posed prom photos. It was a nice contrast against the colorful dresses, and corsages that the models were wearing.

The setup was simple since this was a busy area. I did not want to have a lot of gear strewn around the area since people were already starting to gather for the show. I had one large strobing flash setup through an umbrella with a piece of white diffusion on the end opposite the light. This produces a very nice quality of light that was reproducible for everyone that stepped into the set.

The focus of these photos were the flowers, and this helped to show them off nicely. After I got photos of the corsages and the models with their dresses, I moved the light to the end of the runway. From here, I made some photos as they walked down the red carpet. It was a lot of images in a short amount of time, but I was happy with the results!
