Hare Scramble Racing

This was my first attempt at photographing motorcycle racing of any kind. Hare Scramble racing is a specific type of racing where the riders make multiple laps on a course that has terrain/elevation changes. At this time the course was a naturally rugged course through a farm in Ruckersville, VA. The race on this occasion was part of the Virginia Championship Hare Scramble Series. Being unfamiliar with the sport, the venue, and how things are run, I went in thinking I would try my best, but did not expect to get much from my first time out.

Before getting there, I looked online for some photo ideas. There are a myriad of place online where amazing photographers showcase their work. I go to 500px.com first – I think they have some of the best images online. It can be intimidating to post there as there are so many excellent images there! I decided that I wanted to get some photos of bikes up close to convey the speed and conditions that the racers face in competition.

Luckily, I had no problem with access. The 6.4 mile course had lots of good places to view racing, and you were on your own to monitor the trails to see if any racers were approaching. With the race being in the middle of the bright day, the open fields would be tough for getting light to the helmets without harsh shadows. Plus, I thought the dust might be bad for my lungs and gear!

In the woods, the sun was a lot more subdued. I could adjust more settings from the camera to get what I wanted. Like in ballroom dancing, there was a lot of colors on the bikes and the protective clothing of the riders making auto focus easier when tracking the bikes. I am still going through the photos, but I’ll post more about how I made these images in a future post.

Sunday – Family Day

©TimeLine Media - Virginia country sunset

Hope you enjoyed your Sunday! I have been busy with a lot of photo shoots the passed few days, so I will be in the studio working on them this week. Today was a little rest day before the work week starts tomorrow. Stay tuned to the blog for updates on the progress. There are some really nice images coming soon!

At this time, we went out to visit family in the Virginia farming country. While it is a departure from our suburban area, it is not a long trip. Whereas our neighborhood is stacked with homes, this area has 10-acre home sites keeping everyone a long distance from each other. The quiet on account of the distance is calming.

Also, there are some furry little family members that greet us as soon as we arrive. Since we do not have pets at home, it is a comforting sight and sound as soon as the car stops on this Sunday. Surprisingly, this is also a recharge from photography. The change of scenery allows me to stretch a different part of my photography brain. Thus, I am set to get back to work at the start of the week!

Theodore Roosevelt Island

Theodore Roosevelt Island is a serene spot right in the middle of everything. Just a footbridge across from Arlington, Virginia, this island sits in the Potomac River making it a part of Washington, DC. From the island, you can get views over the river to the tall office buildings in Rosslyn, Virginia. As can be seen people are in these tall buildings have a great view of the capital city. Obviously, This area does not have the same height restrictions as DC!

The parking lot is just off the George Washington Memorial Parkway, and the bike trail which follows it. In that case, it makes it a popular spot for visitors to rest and explore along the way. Many college students attending the nearby universities can be seen on the trails. Moreover, they are in the water enjoying paddle boarding, and boating in the busy waterways surrounding the island.

There were a few markers along the trails marking where a 19th century mansion once stood. Additionally, there are a few describing some of the history and nature that are present there. In the middle, is a memorial to the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. There are canals, two large fountains, and a 17-foot statue of the president at the center. Along the edges are monolithic cement blocks with some of his more famous and profound quotes inscribed.

It is a nice place to rest as you traverse the island trails. The lower trails will follow the river into a marshy, swampy area. Other trails will take you a little higher in elevation. In almost every section, you can have views of the surrounding areas of Georgetown, and Rosslyn. It is not too challenging, and will give you some unique views of the city that are not as popular, but still accessible and beautiful!
