Making cookies!

Bryony has been making cookies for as long as she could reach the kitchen counter:

And her skills have improved with each batch since! The sweet treats are now a favorite for all her coworkers. They are requested for birthdays, potlucks, farewell parties… Thanksgiving………. Arbor Day – whenever cookies are appropriate. She has perfected her technique, as we always get to “QC” the product before it is brought out to public. Of course I’m jealous of her coworkers already – it should be a delicious day at work!

Ducks are the cutter of choice today. It’s a flock of cookie-ducks! Bryony enjoys recognizing the efforts of her co-workers with a little treat once in a while. They are absolutely good for her reputation as she becomes known for these quickly. Likewise it becomes a good way for her to network with other groups at her workplace.

Furious action in putting these little things together! On this occasion, the effort it worth it. Perhaps this is something I can do with my photography business to stand out. Of course I won’t ask her to make treats for potential clients, but it would be good for me to be known for something distinctive that I do well!

Washington, D.C.

Although I usually just casually pass by the monuments, powerful governments offices, and museums as a regular part of my commute, there are occasions when playing tourist in your closest city pays off. When my father was still shuttling us around, he tried to impress upon me all of the shortcuts to get around, the backways to get in and out of the city, and the best landmarks for pictures. He always loved to play tour guide when out-of-town visitors would come to visit. Washington was much the same for him as it is for me – a place that’s not exactly local, not completely familiar, yet is accessible for exploration all-year round. It is a privilege for sure! Please pass along what are your favorite spots to visit when you are in the capital city.

Autumn Leaves

Last Sunday, a walk at Accotink Park in Springfield, VA yielded some leafy color from the autumn leaves. I thought it would be a little better with the wetter weather. Additionally we had cold starting to hit the area. However, it was a little disappointing. Some shots were worth hanging onto.

At this time, there were some very tall trees along the walking trail through the park. To get a photo from the ground to the top of the trees, I used a fisheye lens on the camera. Although there is some obvious distortion of the image, it does capture more of the length of the trees.

The autumn leaves did have some color left on the trees. Against the clear blue skies, they complimented each other especially well. Being that this was a photo where the focus went all the way to infinity, it was important to have this non-distracting background.

Comparatively, these close-up detail of a grass could not be taken without having the background competing. In other words, the background is the same color as the subject. Moreover, there is not much distance between the subject and background. So, I opened the aperture as wide as I could to blur the background in camera.
