Passing Time at SingStrong

Every year before the SingStrong music festival, I look back on the previous year’s photos. I do this to get inspiration, and to think about what to do different in the upcoming year. This helps to improve my photography, and to help get different images for the singers every year. So far, I have been lucky! I have found different places to shoot, different angles, and changes in cameras & editing software has helped to make images better. Of course, you don’t run into the same people at SingStrong every year either. The groups change, the members change, new people make the trek to the festival, and the dynamic of the environment is different.

Reston, Virginia

This year, there was a very sweet proposal of marriage in the middle of the Saturday night concerts! What a milestone for these two, and for the audience that was treated to a special, life-changing, unexpected event. In looking through the old photos from previous festivals, I can piece together another cute little photo story. It’s nice in the digital age to be able to quickly access your previous photos, and notice when things can be put together so nicely!

2010 was the first year I went to the SingStrong. During one of the performances, Blue Jupiter announced they would be adding a member to their group –

The crowd went crazy, and I felt so lucky to have had my camera at my face when it happened since it was so quick! The next year, there was a little one running around with mom and dad, and I knew that this probably was not her first time on the stage –

This year she got a speaking role, and the crowd went crazy again! She’ll be bringing down the house at SingStrong soon, she’s been doing it her whole life! I never thought about this when starting photo projects. I know there have been some with wedding photographers, and portrait photographers that capture personal histories and milestones. This was a neat discovery for me, and one that I’ll definitely have to keep my eyes ready for if another opportunity comes again. Like Jonathan Minkoff said during a coaching, the era of digital media means that what is recorded will likely last forever. Your grand children will be able to see your photo and hear your recordings as well as the day they were recorded! Here’s to hoping to see you again next year!

Monochrome from SingStrong

Finished! The photos from SingStrong are all done, and I am uploading them now. I just wanted to post some of my favorite monochrome (black & white, sepia, toned) images from the weekend. Using this technique can really help in very extreme light, or low light situations such as those at a live music event. You can “push” images a lot easier without affecting the integrity of the composition. Here are some of examples from the weekend – they have a more timeless feel to me than most of the color images.

Yeah, these is not your regular choral a cappella performances. It will knock you back in your seat! Definitely check it out if you can. They will gather again for another SingStrong next year in DC, but you still have a chance to attend the next one in the Chicago area March 22-24, 2013. Get details at their website for performance and ticket information. Know that all proceeds are going to the Alzheimer’s Association from ticket sales and silent auction items. Please support the cause, and enjoy some AMAZING music at the same time! You can meet a lot of the groups, and find other ways to support these artists.

The Funx – SingStrong 2013

There were some new bands that I have not heard or seen prior to SingStrong this year. The Funx was one of those groups, and I have no doubt you will be hearing about them for a long time. My first impression of them came while they were teaching a class on re-imagining songs for a cappella groups. The song they had as an example was “Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse; amazing choice, and the small section that they sang instantly had the attention of everyone in the room! Yeah, I stayed to “get more photos” but really, I just wanted to enjoy their performance a little while longer.

The members of the band jumped feet first into the event coaching other a cappella groups, judging competitions, teaching workshops, and getting the crowd rowdy at their Saturday night performance! Their members are very diverse in background, but they use their talent and experience in vocal performance to make a compelling band to follow. Their members have a diversity of experience both in the a cappella world and even on American Idol! They took turns singing lead during their concert – the feel could go from sultry, jazzy, to energetic and in-your-face! They were definitely an audience favorite in a packed group of performances. You can buy their EP directly from iTunes, and follow The Funx on Facebook and Twitter.
