Lightroom Print Template – Tech Thursday

Managing thousands of photos can be daunting task when returning from a shoot. The Library and Develop modules are where I live when using Adobe Lightroom. These have almost all the functions I need to manage and edit large sets of photos from events that I photograph.

I have talked about the Library and Develop modules in previous posts, but today, I want to focus on the Print Module. This is the next most used section for me. From here, you can prepare images for printing at the lab or at your home printer if you have one available. None of the photos from TimeLine Media are printed at home – all are sent to professional labs prior to sending  in the mail. Why? The labs are experts at making prints. They print these optically onto photographic paper, not inkjet printing. There is still lots of development being done with professional inkjet printers, but I still prefer the optical prints on Kodak or Fuji paper.

Printing Options

The Print Module, much like the Develop module, also has presets available to use in your work. Lightroom comes with some built in presets that define what size print you like to make, and on what size paper on which you are printing. This is very helpful if you have a specific frame size in mind for your photo. You simply select the size photo, and you can instantly see if the photo fits well, if you could go larger, or if you need to change the perspective of your photo. All of these changes are easily made within either the Print or Develop modules:

The next panel down allows you to change your page setup. Here you can change the background color of your page, or add a watermark. This helps to see if you final print will look better on a traditional white or black matte background, or if you would look better on a funky background that is uniquely fitted to your image:

Ballroom Brag Book

Once you have all of your settings completed, you can save your favorite setup as a preset. This will allow you to apply this template for printing to any photo. You only need to select the photo from the Library Module, and drop it into the preset template in the Print Module. This is where you can add your creativity to your photography by creating new templates. I recently used this to make a ballroom dance book for the Arthur Murray studios in the area.

The book was 10″ x 10″, so I created a new template with these dimensions. My thought was to have a large collage with as many photos as I could fit on the cover to show how many great photos we have made over the passed year. Since the cover was square, I had the idea to make each image square. With this in mind I made a 1″x1″ square, then copied and stacked another 1″x1″ square on top of it. To complete a 10″x10″ cover, that made 100 photos! It took a long time to create the template, but I was really pleased with the results! It was a great way to get attention at the photo booth. If you want to use my template, I have attached it here-

KISS Wedding books

Digital wedding albums is rising in popularity these days. The “magazine” style album is a more traditional look compared to the matted albums from Seldex. In searching the internet for these contemporary digital albums, it becomes dizzying with the amount of options. Additionally there are many styles that can be used to customize you wedding album. After much searching and viewing other studio samples, I am going with the KISS Wedding books. With the KISS Wedding books, they are making it as simple as it can be. Moreover, the quality of the books is outstanding. The lab for printing and assembling is in the US making the communication and shipping times much faster than with other album makers.

Cover for KISS Wedding books

The outside covering for transporting and storing the book is not my style. However, it is very sturdy and made of a canvas material. It is soft enough not to scratch the cover of the book.

The outside leather cover is available in 7 different colors.

For any panoramic spreads, there is no space, but a tiny fold down the middle of the book. It easily lays flat on a table for viewing.

As a photographer the KISS customer service was excellent – they give you quick feedback on the status of your order – checking the files prior to printing to ensure the best output. The ordering, processing, and shipment of the book was very easy which should translate to quicker production and final shipment to the newly-married couple.

Seldex matted albums

In preparation for the upcoming bridal show in Chantilly, I had some sample wedding albums made for the display. The Seldex 10 inch square album from Finao is the one shown here. It is a more traditional album in that it is made with photographic prints that are matted to the pages of the book. I have seen many albums that are available at retail shops, but this album is definitely a cut above. The cover on this particular album is “Burgundy Nepal” color made from an imitation leather material.

Mat Prints

I assemble each of these albums myself. It starts with designing of mat placement, editing and retouching of the photos. Finally the assembling of the photos/mats to the final book pages.

Each mat in the album is white with a white core although other colors and combinations are available from the manufacturer. The mat itself has a very fine texture to give the pages a feel similar to linen right up to the edges of each mat opening.

Each page of the book has a protective metal corner colored to match the pages. In this case it makes book assembly easier. Additionally, protects the edges as the book is used over time.

The binding for the book is very thick, and is very secure. The cover material is soft and pliable ensuring a long life of use either on a table or on a shelf. This book is definitely made to be used! This type of album could also be used as a parent album as it can be made in smaller dimensions, or as a proof-like album from a wedding or portrait session. This is definitely recommended if you’re looking for a matted album that is secured in it’s construction, yet customizable for each project.
