Lancaster Pennsylvania Covered Bridges

Earlier this month, we traveled to Lancaster County, PA to help another photographer cover a beautiful wedding. The road trip allowed for some time to explore this part of the country that is not that far, but one that I have not visited in a very long time! The helpful visitor’s center pointed out some of the places that would be great for out of town visitors to see. The highlight for me and my camera were the covered bridges! I cannot remember the last time I had come across these in my travels, so I was excited to get some photos while we were in the area.

Little did I know there were so many around! We could easily drive to a few in a day, spend some time making photos, and still do some other sightseeing. These bridges all came with information right by their entrances. You can read about their history, their construction, and how they have changed in function over the years.

They had a nice setting in the farming country of southern Pennsylvania. Surrounded by cornfields, and spanning the waterways that carried commerce from Amish farms to the towns really gives you the sense of their importance in the development of the area. Although many of the covered bridges have been replaced so many are still in use. They help to preserve the history, and add nicely to the landscape. I will definitely try to make it back to see others next time.

Middleburg Point to Point

Another beautiful Sunday! The wedding I photographed as an assistant yesterday went well. As can be seen, I do not do as many weddings comparatively to the start of my career. When you do not do it consistently, it takes a little more out of you. Today, I’ll recover a little for sure. There was a lot of lifting and walking yesterday! Hopefully, I was useful as an assistant and second shooter.

With the Kentucky Derby run yesterday, I was reminded of our day at the Middleburg Hunt Point to Point last weekend. Besides the horse racers and tailgaters, there were also lots of other animals in the crowd enjoying the festivities. The horses were not the only animals roaming the park on Sunday. Being a large outside park, pets were welcome to attend. Many dogs came to visit, some of them even dressed for the Best Bow Tie and Best Bonnet contests. The owners were proud to show off their costumes and introduce the crowds to their costumed contenders.

Middleburg Hunt – Point to Point

Here are some of the photos from last Sunday’s Middleburg Hunt Point to Point. It was drizzling all day even though we had a weatherman on site! The weather did not dampen the spirits of the guests, however. There was plenty of food from some creative tailgates. The judging this year was tough with colorful decorations, and some unique themes. The “Mad Hatter” tailgate was particularly memorable for the costumes and the unique bottles of “potions”.

I also enjoyed seeing the best bonnet and best tie competitions in the afternoon. In addition to the setting, the dress also makes the event. Of course throwing a little competition in there makes the contestants go for the prize!

But the highlight for me is still the horse racing. I did not get as many shots of the racing this year since many of the finishes were too good to miss! The thundering sound of the horses coming to the end of the race had me riveted to the action. Here are some of my favorites from just after the races ended. Enjoy!
