Weekend Website Updates – Dance Photography Virginia, DC, MD

Bachata Masters - ©TimeLine Media

There are lots of things going on at the website, Facebook page, and offline for TimeLine Media! Monday is the last day to view photos from the Bachata Masters event that was held in Rockville, MD last November 2, 2013. This was a cold night outside, but a hot night of dancing! The bachata and mambo fans were out in force that night, and it made for some great photos.

On the Facebook page, today is the last day to vote for the favorite studio posters from the DC Area Arthur Murray dance studios. To add your vote to the mix, go to the Facebook page [ http://www.facebook.com/timelinemedia ] and look through the six photos from each of the studios. The 2 collages that receive the most votes will be printed large and displayed at the upcoming Spring Freestyles event. There are definitely 2 front runners, but I will not count the finally tally until tonight. Share the link to get the most votes for your favorite!

Lastly, I am getting all the gear ready for the Baltimore Dancesport Challenge this weekend. We are excited about getting to see more dancing! The organizers and venue at this event are always photographer friendly. We will be taking more action photos of the dancers as they compete, and for package holders, we will be printing one photo from the day for them to take home! It is something new that we are trying for this year. It was the idea of Marielle Pabon, the owner of the event, and we think it will be a great added value for attendees. Stay tuned to the blog to see how it turns out! See you this weekend –

Leaf Shutter Lenses Part 1 – Tech Thursday

The wintry weather finally broke for a little bit last week! I finally had a good chance to test one of the best features of the Fuji X100s camera – the leaf shutter lens. Most cameras produced today have focal plane shutters which have a curtain that opens and closes in front of the sensor. With a leaf shutter lens, there are blades built into the lens itself that opens and closes as the shutter opens and closes in the camera. As you press the shutter button on the camera, there is no difference in the operation between these two types of lenses. Where the big difference comes is in the fastest flash sync speed that is possible when using a leaf shutter lens. This opens up a lot of creative possibilities!

Camera Tech

On typical DSLRs, between 1/160th to 1/250th of a second is the fastest shutter speeds that you can use if you want the flash to fully expose the frame. If you use a strobe with a DSLR and have your shutter speed set higher (ie 1/500th second or higher) you will start to get a large black band on your photo where the curtain is still covering a part of the sensor since the shutter speed is too high. This is not a limitation for leaf shutter lenses such as the one in the Fuji X100s. When shooting indoors, like ballroom dance competitions, this limitation is not a problem as 1/250th second is plenty fast to control the light coming into the camera.

The limitation of 1/250th really impacts outdoor shoots. If you want to use a flash, and you have to keep your shutter speed at 1/250th or slower, that means you need to close down your aperture – f/8 or higher depending on how bright the sun is outside. In viewing these photos, everything including your background will be in focus making it difficult to separate your subject from the background. One solution is to not use a flash since you have plenty of light, but now all the tones in the scene are very similar making the image flat, and not as dynamic. Next week, I’ll show you how the leaf shutter lens really changes this photo with the change of a few settings in the same scene.

It is about time we get back to the dance floor! We have fully recovered from the last event, and we have cleared off the computers and are ready to get more Dancesport images this upcoming weekend. TimeLine Media is the official photography vendor for this weekend’s Baltimore Dancesport Challenge being held at the Westin – Baltimore Washington International Airport.

This hotel has a beautiful ballroom for dance events. It is very accessible from the entrance to the hotel making it easy for setup, and finding the event. We enjoy having a nice setup inside the ballroom so that you can see the previews that we have during the day of dancing. We are planning on doing some extra special photo offers for package holders at the event, so please stop by towards the end of the event to see what we have for you.

We enjoy covering this event since we see so many familiar faces on the dance floor. We know that some of you that were at the USA Dance Mid-Atlantic Championships will also be there this weekend, so you will have 2 events that you can review in a week or so. I know that the organizers also arrange for a great show to end the evening, so be sure to stay until the end to see what they have planned this year. Not to mention, there is a lot of general dancing during the evening, so you can do some social dancing after the competitive heats are done. We hope to see more blog readers at the Baltimore Dancesport Challenge this weekend!
