Black and White Ballroom Dancers

It is rare that I shoot ballroom dancing in black and white. For those that shoot RAW files with their cameras, it is possible to shoot in monochrome styles and preserve the color information in your images. What is displayed on the back of your camera is a JPG file. If you shoot to JPG files, there are many settings that the camera makes for you – sharpening, white balance, color saturation, that are more difficult to change once the settings are “baked in” to the JPG file. If you shoot RAW, all of these settings can be manipulated in the RAW processor/converter software afterwards. Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw which is built into recent versions of Adobe Photoshop, are examples of these.

Black and White Images

Most digital cameras allow users to shoot monochrome images directly in camera. If you shoot to JPG, the color data from your image will be tossed out by the camera. It will be impossible to recover this color information. Similarly to shooting on black and white negatives on a film camera this information is not recorded. However, if you shoot to desaturated RAW files, the only file that will be black and white is the JPG preview that will be show on the back of the camera. The RAW file will still retain all the color information taken at the time of capture.

That being the case, you can easily go back to the RAW file and convert it to black and white in Lightroom, and possibly do a better conversion than your camera! The images in posting today were all captured in RAW files. Although it does take up more room on your memory cards and hard drives to do so, there are just so many advantages to shooting in RAW, that I cannot see myself doing it any other way. This color to black and white conversion is just one of the many reasons to do so.

Big Expiration Day on Monday!

Dance Photography

This upcoming Monday, there are 9 past 2013 events that will be removed from the proofing website. It has been fun to go through these old events to find some exciting images to post onto the blog! I meant to come back to these images sooner, but had so many other photos to share throughout the year, that I did not find a slot for these until now. If you want to see the expiration dates and events, please visit the proofing site here:

It has been great to have so many photos to share, and lots of content to write about in these posts. Writing it down in this format has made me more accountable as a professional photographer. It has given me a push to keep shooting photos, to keep improving each time I make images, and importantly, to give me a concrete goal to work for every day.

Undoubtedly writing the blog has made me a better editor! I try to limit the amount of photos in each post. I could just throw up 10 images in each post and write a few sentences. There are a few blogs that I follow in which this is the case, so I wanted to do something different. Also, limit the amount of photos so that only the very best are featured. That is one of the secrets of pro photographers – if you only show the best of the best, it makes it seem like EVERY photo you take is amazing! The also helps me to home in on the best images when I’m shooting, so there is not a huge number of unusable photos that need to be edited after the event.

I think there is progress from doing this blog so far, and I already have a list of ideas that I want to do this year with my photography. Some will be done at events, and some I will have to schedule outside of these. It will be interesting to see a few months from now how many of these I will complete! Again, visit the proofing site before the expiration of events.

2013 Ballroom Dance Photography

Turning over the New Year is always a time to look back on the previous year. I had planned to go back to look over my images from 2013, and post my favorites on the blog. Maybe I would add more back story to some of them, and some insights into the images after some time that they were taken. But, I have not yet found the time to do so! I will have to do it this week, though, since this upcoming Monday is a big day for these images.

2013 Looking Back

Next Monday, January 13, 2014, will be the last day to view the re-uploaded images on the proofing site. Before the holidays, the website re-released all the events that TimeLine Media covered in 2013 for holiday photo ordering. Thank you to everyone that came back to the website to view and purchase photos! We are so happy that you found some favorites to hang on your walls, and display on your Facebook pages. We love seeing everyone enjoy the images of their dancing!

After Monday, the events on the website will be removed and put back in to the archives so that we can make more room for upcoming events. We have many planned for the year, and I am sure all the dancers are working on bigger and better things to photograph at competition. Any of the older events that we have covered can still be retrieved from the archive, but it is $30 to go back, get the files, and re-upload them to be viewable. So this is your last chance to see these for free! Please share the links to the events to your friends, family, and studio mates, and encourage anyone that did not attend, to come out to the competitions this year! We hope to have another great year of dancing and photography.
