Happy Monday! Today is the last day to view and order photos from the 2013 DC Area Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles. The photos will be removed from the website tonight, and will be put in the electronic archive.

Please note!! I have changed my main website, which has made changes to the proofing website. No longer do you put “www.” in front of the address for the proofing site. If you are looking for your photos from recent events, putting the “www.” in front of the proofing address will result in an error. Photography Websites

It has never been easier to share your photos online. I can remember in the first years of the web how magical it was to download photos. Using a web browser was so easy. Comparatively you had to download individual files from a gopher or FTP site. Then open the photos in a separate JPG or GIF viewing program. With the browser, you had an experience that was much easier to view a collection of photos in an album-like setting.

Now, social media networks heavily encourage the sharing of images online. With the price that Facebook paid to acquire Instagram, it is not surprising to see where they see the most participation in their users. With all the social networks, though, there is a tradeoff for photographers. Because all of these networks are free to sign up, participate, and share, the companies need to make revenue somewhere. YOU and your photos are now the currency that these networks use to grow their business. In some small parts, they are taking your photos and using them to get more people to share and participate, and they hope, get them to patronize their advertisers.

To take more control over this natural give and take, I believe all photographers should have their own web space that they are paying for, and maintaining themselves. It has never been easier to reserve your own domain name, and sign up with a web host with all the gigabytes of storage you need for a minimal cost. If you are bothered by these social networks “stealing” your images to use, this is the best way to display your photos online. I post a little on these as a way to drive traffic to my personal website!

Speaking of which, my portfolio website is currently undergoing and exciting revision! I am switching over to a new service for showing off my best images. I will post more when the transition is finished, and I would love to hear what my blog readers think of the changes!

Arthur Murray – 2013 Fall Freestyles

In less than a week, 2013 Fall Freestyles will expire from the proofing website! This will be the last time to view and share the photos from this event before it goes back into the archives. There is an extra charge to retrieve the files after Monday, so let everyone that may like to see their photos about the deadline!

Looking back, there were a lot of nice photos from this event. It was packed from start to finish with dancing as the music and the emcees kept the action going all weekend long. The Potomac Cup team match is always a highlight at the freestyles. At the event, the Virginia side rocked out with 80’s hair band costumes, while the Maryland side had magic on their side with a Harry Potter theme. Both sides really went all out with their decorations, and their enthusiasm!

Who came out on top?? VIR – GIN – IA!!

It has not been too long since I have gone through these photos. With the New Year, I am looking to update my portfolio website which has not changed in quite a while. In 2013, I focused on getting the blog up and running with fresh content every day, now I need to go back and redo the main website. Although it has not changed for some time, there are still good images there. Most did not make the cut for the new website since there has been so many changes in my shooting style, my equipment, and the way I post process the photos, so many of them will be going away. Stay tuned to more developments on this very soon!
