Day at the Races

It was a late night of dancing at the Salsa-Bachata Throwdown last night. And it’s an early call this morning at the races! At this time, I am out getting some video and photos at the racetrack. I’m getting some good video for a personal project. The red car below was built and raced by my father in law. It is a beautiful convertible that resembles a Shelby Cobra. I particularly like the peal red paint. It is easy to find as his group zips around the track.

Since this is a large racing facility, you cannot see all the track from any vantage point. With this in mind, you need to pick certain areas and stay in that area for the entire race. Although you cannot see everything, there is nice access to exciting curves around the infield. I plan to have a short video to share with you soon. It’s a beautiful day to be outside! Hope you too are enjoying the weather.

Thanks especially to all of you that have visited and ordered prints and digital downloads of your favorites – we really appreciate your support of our photography. It makes it possible for us to strive for better images at the next event. I also would like to thank the studio managers and teachers who are always so helpful in getting us situated at the venues. It is much more difficult than just showing up and pressing a shutter button to get these photos. We are grateful for the assistance! Here are some of my favorites from the event – have a great weekend!

Ballroom dance – portrait photos

Arthur-Murray-Ashburn-group-photo-www.timelinedc.com

If you have never been to a ballroom dance event, you have missed a feast for the eyes and ears. If you enjoy music, the high volume of instrumentals and vocals will call you to the ballroom if you are anywhere within earshot. When you venture towards the sounds, the music will get louder, there will be screams of encouragement from the audience. Then the visuals will hit you. There are colorful ballroom gowns, dancers moving confidently across the floor. Moreover the flash bulbs firing off from the audience – it is a lot to take in!

Portraits

I remember  my first time entering such an event. It was overwhelming, and being a first-time participant, I was definitely anxious about getting out on the floor. This is what makes photographing ballroom dance so compelling. There are a million things going through the minds of dancers; there is a coordinated dance behind the scenes to keep the event moving from the organizers, and it all plays out in front of a live audience consisting of your dancing friends and other supporters in the crowd.

After being in a ballroom for a few minutes, you can easily see how photographers can end up with thousands of photos after a weekend. The action photos of dancers take the bulk of the collection, but there are times during small breaks in the action, that you can capture some really nice portraits. All the cameras are set up, so why not take a break from the normal photos, and grab other interesting shots. After the main dancing was over, I will setup a light or two outside to get some posed photos of dancers and other guests, so come and visit me if you’d like one! Here are some of my favorites from the recent Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles. Enjoy!
