Concert Lighting White Balance | Tech Tuesday

Theatrical lighting for stage performances adds to the spectacle of musical performances. In the times I have covered musical groups as they performed, I have enjoyed using the additional lights around the stage as cool props that can add to the images. The lights at SingStrong were especially timed with the performance which enhanced the mood of the performances. They can be challenge to get good focus as the darkened arena against the strong point light sources is not ideal for auto focus systems in cameras. There are a lot of missed shots in the collection!

The other challenge comes in post processing the images after the concert. The lighting can be very strong in color casts. Whether that comes from gels over lights, or LEDs that can be any color, they will cast strong color. Of course, this color will be over their faces and skin tones which is always a challenge to balance afterwards. For this shoot, I had the white balance set to auto. Because I was shooting raw files, I planned to adjust the settings later in post.

The lighting in the photo was a strong blue backlight that you can see on the left of the frame. From the front house lights, there was a red light on the front of the performers which is a common combination in stage lighting. To balance the color in Lightroom, I went into the Develop module, selected the White Balance tool, and then placed a point on the gray head of the microphone. I always look for gray colors for balancing as a starting point, and it worked well in this case toning down the pink skin tones.

I have much better luck going for gray tones in the frame. Sometimes there is not enough data in white or black areas to get an accurate white balance setting. The software may tell you, however, it will not change anything in your photo depending on the image. Of course, it is always important to have a calibrated monitor to ensure consistency in printing images. If the color cast is too strong, removing all color from the photo is also an option, and one I go to frequently!

Tysons Corner Center Plaza Dedication

Tysons, Virginia

If you have been following me on social media, you know that I have been posting a lot from the new Tysons Corner Center Plaza. Last week was the dedication and opening of the newly constructed outdoor space adjacent to the shopping mall. This will definitely be a central meeting place for shoppers, workers, and residents in the new Tysons Corner area. With all the future plans designed around the new Silver Line Metro line, the development has been in full swing for the last few years. This plaza dedication is an important milestone for those that have been involved. So much went into the planning, designing, and building of structures. Now they are rising to make a new northern Virginia skyline.

Dedication Ceremony

When standing in the plaza, there is a great sense of space above you. With three large buildings that will contain offices, apartments, and a hotel respectively, you are impressed by their scale! But with the large open plaza, it does not at all feel confining or restrictive. The outdoor light that comes through the mall concourse invites mall visitors to come outside. With lots of benches, grassy areas, and sitting walls, there is plenty of room to host a large number of people without feeling crowded. With the opening, the plaza was very full of kiosks, and people playing games. Even with the nice weather, there was still plenty of room.

The speakers at the dedication spoke about how they see this being the center of business and commerce. They will come here to make connections that will further shape the future of the area which has seen so much growth and development already. I am confident that from what I have seen so far, the planners have done their job right! It is easy to see how they continue to smartly engineer buildings and spaces that allow access and community gathering for a busy and growing community.

Tysons Corner Center – the Plaza

Just another quick post today – it will be a busy few days at the Tysons Corner Center. I will be there to cover all the activities! For those that live in the northern Virginia area, Tysons Corner has seen lanes expanding on the freeway. Also, we have railways snaking above the roadways, and tall buildings rising into the sky.

This weekend will be a big milestone in many of the projects for the area. At this time, will be the opening of The Plaza that extends out of Tysons Corner Center. I got a sneak peek into the place, and can tell you it will be a great space for families, shoppers, and business people as they pass through the area. Since this is just the beginning, it is a great blank canvas for events.

When there are no events going on, it will be a nice spot just to enjoy the outdoor weather. During sunny days, they have overhead protection from the sun above the benches. Likewise there are gas heaters around some benches during colder months. If you will attend any of the festivities this weekend, and I think you should – stop by and say hello!
