Tysons Corner Summer Concerts | VA Music Photography

Music concerts are the next Plaza events this year. I posted recently about the dedication ceremony of the new Tysons Corner Center Plaza. Additionally, musicians will play on the Plaza! There have been a lot of events this summer around the new space. Great weather has blessed the guests too! The area is constantly changing seeing that it is a versatile space for activities, demonstrations, movies, and concerts. Every Friday until August 29, there is a concert held at the plaza. You particularly have to see the lineup and find out about getting entrance at the Tysons Corner Center website. At this time, the series of concerts is sponsored by Intelsat and 94.7 Fresh FMIntelsat’s new building serves as the backdrop for these performances, and additionally provides a nice setting for the stage.

The hosts for these concerts are some familiar personalities from 94.7 FM’s morning show. Before each band comes on, they get the crowd ready to hear some great music! So far, these bands have taken the stage: Black Alley, a local DC band opened the series after their win at the Battle with Bite. Next, Alex & Sierra, the singing duo who won the last season of X-Factor, Finally, the band Oh Honey singing their hit, “Be Okay” in an acoustic set.

Fortunately, there has been great cool evenings for these concerts, and tonight should be another great one. The elevated Plaza is a great place to watch the setting sun and listen to a concert. With the sound bouncing around the buildings, it lessens the harshness on the ears. Tonight violinist / dancer / performance artist Linsey Stirling will be performing. From her wildly popular online videos, it should be an entertaining show!

HDR in Full Sun – Tech Thursday

Tysons, Virginia

How can HDR help your photography? Shooting early in the morning around sunrise or later in the afternoon near sunset, photography can be very easy. Why fight harsh lighting in your photos? Not only is it easier on your own eyes as you look through the viewfinder, but the lighting is much more flattering for subjects. This includes people and buildings! If you go outside at high noon or whenever the sunlight is the strongest outside, and you will see dark shadows everywhere.

Later in the day, the shadows will change direction giving more dimension to what you are photographing. Unfortunately, some photo assignments are not flexible enough to take advantage of nice golden hour sunlight. Last weekend, the Washington Metro system inaugurated service on its new Silver Line. I was sent to cover the first trains as they pulled into stations after they were open for service. The first trains were expected to go through the new stations between noon and 12:30PM in the afternoon. From when I first stepped out onto the platform, I knew that this was going to be a challenge!

Metro Trains in Tysons

Looking at this photo, you can see that there are very dark shadows underneath the awning with bright sun out on the platform. It was so bright, it was difficult for me to even look at the back of the camera to make some adjustments. Since I was not sure exactly when the first train would be coming by, I did not waste too much time chimping the images. I was shooting at ISO 100, so I knew that there would be a lot of latitude for me to adjust the photos in post. These were easily adjusted by boosting the Shadows slider in Lightroom:

Another solution is to use HDR, high dynamic range, photography to bring out more of the details from the shadows while keeping details in the highlights. I have posted many times about HDR before where I describe how you take a series of images of the same scene at varying exposures. With the HDR software, you combine these images and make adjustments when you are presented with a very high contrast scene. It worked very well here. The first image is one of the single images from the series that I took, and the second is the combined HDR image.

This really helped to solve to problem capturing all the detail of the scene in one image. It was so bright, so usually the shadow detail will be lost. If you try to get the darker areas to be brighter, you will lose detail in the highlights. HDR did take a little more work, but I was happy with how these turned out!

Tysons Corner Center Plaza Dedication

Tysons, Virginia

If you have been following me on social media, you know that I have been posting a lot from the new Tysons Corner Center Plaza. Last week was the dedication and opening of the newly constructed outdoor space adjacent to the shopping mall. This will definitely be a central meeting place for shoppers, workers, and residents in the new Tysons Corner area. With all the future plans designed around the new Silver Line Metro line, the development has been in full swing for the last few years. This plaza dedication is an important milestone for those that have been involved. So much went into the planning, designing, and building of structures. Now they are rising to make a new northern Virginia skyline.

Dedication Ceremony

When standing in the plaza, there is a great sense of space above you. With three large buildings that will contain offices, apartments, and a hotel respectively, you are impressed by their scale! But with the large open plaza, it does not at all feel confining or restrictive. The outdoor light that comes through the mall concourse invites mall visitors to come outside. With lots of benches, grassy areas, and sitting walls, there is plenty of room to host a large number of people without feeling crowded. With the opening, the plaza was very full of kiosks, and people playing games. Even with the nice weather, there was still plenty of room.

The speakers at the dedication spoke about how they see this being the center of business and commerce. They will come here to make connections that will further shape the future of the area which has seen so much growth and development already. I am confident that from what I have seen so far, the planners have done their job right! It is easy to see how they continue to smartly engineer buildings and spaces that allow access and community gathering for a busy and growing community.
