Andy Grammer at Tysons Corner Center | Virginia Music Photographer

Play on the Plaza

Last Friday was another beautiful evening at Tysons Corner Center. On this occasion, the 94.7 Fresh Artists Concert Series welcomed Andy Grammer to the stage! He came and sang solo with just his guitar. Additionally he did some beat-boxing / mouth drumming thrown in. It highlighted the great reverb in the space between the large buildings around the Plaza.

If you listen to pop music radio Andy Grammer will have a familiar sound with his tracks getting a lot of airtime including, “Keep Your Head Up”, “Fine By Me”, and “Miss Me”. Even though it was just him on the stage with a guitar, his energetic sound filled up the space nicely. The connection with the crowd was easily felt with the nice introduction by Kelly Collis of 94.7 Fresh FM and a group of young fans. The audience also readily joined in with the very sing-able chorus of “Back Home”.

We have been so lucky the last few Fridays for this concert series! It was a perfect summer for Tysons Corner to open the Plaza to the public. So many have been able to enjoy the outdoor space and share their experience on social media, so I am sure that next summer’s series will have even more in the crowd! Thanks to Tysons Corner Center for giving me the opportunity to cover this series for them. It has been a lot of fun getting photos of the artists performing, and the crowd enjoying the music and the weather on these evenings.

Tonight is the last in the series, so you can still go and get your wristbands this morning to see Jacquie Lee perform. It looks like it will be another nice night to see an outdoor concert. Come out to hear the music, and come back to the blog to see the photos!

Arthur Murray Showcase Posters | Ballroom Dance Photographer

Tysons, Virginia

For new posters, I had to look through 13 Shows! Wow! I got a little worried when the emcee announced this at the Arthur Murray Summer Showcase. Do I have enough battery in the cameras? Do I have enough memory cards in my pocket? When it comes down to the professional shows at the end of an event, the entire crowd positions their seats at the edge of the floor. I squeeze myself in between some nice dancers and stay there until they are finished! Thanks to everyone that does not mind me hanging out by their feet while watching these awesome shows.

Since the next Arthur Murray – their Fall Freestyles – is just around the corner, it is time to make some new posters! With 13 shows, I had a lot of work to do for these. To make it a little simpler, I decided to have just one image on each of the posters. Additionally, I wanted to have the dancers selected out of the background with color. This was a favorite effect from the feedback that I received from the last set, so I decided to do that again but I knew that something else needed to be added.

If you couldn’t guess from the examples so far, I went with a 3D text effect. Originally I was going for a superhero title since there seem to be so many movies from this genre over the summer. Luckily, there are a lot of 3D effects that you can add to text or other layers very easily in Photoshop CC 2014. I will go over what I learned while working on these on a future post, but I wanted to get these out soon for voting. To see all the photo posters, and to vote for your favorites, please go to the TimeLine Media Facebook page and vote by clicking the “Like” button for your favorite posters. Voting will end on Monday September 8, and the winning posters will be displayed at the Fall Freestyles that weekend.

The Magic of Chimping | Tech Tuesday

Checking Your Work

Chimping? That is a term that is associated with digital photography. You take a photo then quickly look at the back of the camera and exclaim “Oo Oo Ah Ah!” like a chimpanzee when you see the results! If you made the switch from shooting analog to digital, this is the first departure in the experiences. Immediately, you have a tangible result from your photography. There is no waiting, no guessing whether or not you captured a usable image.

AMC shows movies on their TV channel that describes behind-the-scenes facts about the film as it is playing. One of our favorites was the 1984 movie, “The Karate Kid”. When watching it on AMC, there is one scene of the boy practicing forms on a boat floating in a small pond as the sunset in front of him. It is an amazing piece of cinematography that they could only shoot twice before the light disappeared. There was no chimping back then – everything was shot on film with no immediate preview of the footage. No way to know if the shot was really made until after the film was developed and viewed later.

Yes, everything may have looked okay with the settings on the camera. For example, the lenses, and the meter readings taken before rolling the cameras, but how could you be sure? Obviously, a large professional film crew should have all their checks in place. But how confident would you be as a lone photographer on an important assignment?

This is the second bit of magic – giving you the confidence that you do have the images that you or your clients absolutely need. When you say the images are “in the can” with digital photography, you have a good feeling about it because of chimping. This frees you to get additional images that you would not take unless you had the time and opportunity to do so after fulfilling all your requirements. During the performances at the Tysons Corner Center Plaza, I have been very lucky to have an all-access pass from behind the stage, to the front of the stage. With the open plaza as the “house” there is are a number of different places you can make images of performers during their concerts.

From the front of the stage, you get the performers with the banners of all the sponsors, and some of the imposing buildings in the back. In the crowd, you get the performers with out of focus crowd in the foreground bringing you into the frame.

But when you get to try some different angles, you may find yourself behind the performers catching just an edge of light from the spotlights at the front of the stage. It is very tricky to correctly meter and focus, but the results produce a much different view than the audience sees. Getting to experiment with this much success is very magical indeed!
