Arthur Murray Silver Spring Professional Show | Dance Photographer

Tysons, Virginia

The preparations are in full swing now for the upcoming DC Area Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles event! It will be held at the Hilton McLean in Tysons Corner, VA on September 12-13, 2014. We have seen a lot of practicing in the studio the last few weeks, so I know the dancers are getting excited about showing off their new dresses, and planning their hair and makeup for the weekend dancing. I am currently working on posters to display at the event. Check out the TimeLine Media Facebook page for updates on the poster contest from the last Showcase event. I am not sure exactly how many will be printed for the event, so look there for updates.

The first post from the last Arthur Murray event is from the last professional show of the evening by the Silver Spring, Maryland studio. Tess and Omar have been teaching, competing and performing all across the country for the last few years. As dancers, we have been blessed to watch them as they have put their talents on display for us to be enjoy and be inspired to improve our own dancing.

Final Show

Earlier in the day, Omar told me the sad news that this would be their last show in our local events as their partnership was ending. This is always bittersweet to hear when good dancers leave the area. Especially for these two, as I have made so many great images of their dancing in their long career dancing together.

This performance was a compilation of so many styles. These two have done this before mixing pieces of figures from different dances as they interpret the music. They have done this before in other shows, and I always enjoy the photos as I review them. Selfishly, these are the ones that I wish I could watch without having to have my eye in the camera. This was another one – the emotion, the reactions from the Silver Spring crowd that new the circumstances, and the other teachers that have admired and worked and watched their work – it was too much to take in, but I tried my best. This is one of the cases where I don’t think it was enough. Best of luck to both of them as they start new chapters!

Looking Back | Throwback Thursday

Just in case you have not noticed, I have changed the date for my Technology/Technique posts. With everyone on social networks posting #TBT or “Throwback Thursday” photos, I wanted to join in on the fun. I have a huge library of photos from days past, and the collection keeps growing every week!

This will probably force me to look back on some older images, and hopefully see how I have improved, and grown as a photographer and blogger. I may go even further back and see where I have come from to help me see where I should be going. Does that sound too serious – I hope not! I have enjoyed looking at the older images of friends and family as they post to Facebook and Instagram, and I want to join in the fun.

I am so lucky to have so many photos that my parents made over the years from times before I was born to the present. In trying to work with these photos – where is the data? Overall, I am completely spoiled with the amount of data that you get from digital photography. The camera, aperture, the date, and sometimes the place where you take these photos are all a few clicks away. Comparatively, analog images turned into digital files have none of these. You have to examine each on their own and try to determine the relevant data by looking at the faces, the backgrounds, and asking people that were in the photos if they remember where they were taken. It’s a great start for a trip down memory lane.

Better Than Ezra at Tysons Corner Center

Summer Concert Series

Personally, this was an exciting assignment for me – covering the 94.7 Fresh Artist Concert Series at Tysons Corner Center. Better than Ezra has been putting out hit singles since I was in college. Their songs had a sound that I identify with that time in my life. I looked forward to hearing them perform live! Before they took the stage, they had a meet and greet with some fans that won the chance to see them and have their photos taken. What I did not know was that all the members of the band have a great sense of humor! The fans that met them up close had a good time with their antics, and they made for some great photos. Visit the Tysons Corner Center Facebook page to see all of them!

When they took the stage, they did not disappoint! They sounded terrific in the Plaza. With the sound setup, the reverb off the buildings, and the singing from the crowd it was a nice evening of music. I always wonder what songwriters think when they take the stage in front of a crowd of people that have not seen them before, or in an area that they do not visit often, and the audience knows all the words and melodies of a song. This is a composition that started as a unique thought in your head, and through the modern distribution of communication and media, it is now a collective memory over so many!

Better that Ezra played all of their recognizable hits along with their new singles. “A Lifetime”, “Extraordinary”, “Good” – it was awesome to hear live, and I really had to remember to keep taking photos! Two more Fridays will have concerts in the series, so be sure to get your wristbands at Tysons before they are gone!
