SingStrong – Without Color

Photographing SingStrong musicians performing is one of the most exciting projects you can have! These artists have done hours of practice with their groups before going on stage. In a cappella, all-vocal music, the performers are really bare out in front of the crowd without any instruments to “hide” behind when singing. The groups really rely on each other during their sets.

The musical art form obviously is focused on affecting your ears more than your eyes. A photographer is usually concerned about the visuals – trying to keep distracting elements from getting in front of your main subjects. Anything that can be moved out of the way prior to firing the shutter will save lots of time in Photoshop later. For photographing live music, there is a lot of things in front of the performers that serve the primary function for the audience – speakers, wires, microphones, etc.

All of these things add to the environment of the scene. At SingStrong, the sound setup is one of the best I have ever come across for vocal music. Marty and his crew really work magic to make sure the audio is perfect for both the performers and the people in the seats. The lighting setup makes it very easy to photograph giving lots of options to shoot the performers. They have strong backlights, spotlights from the front of the house, and other accents that they use throughout the night.

Changing these select image to monochrome helps to blend the distracting elements so that the performers are still front and center. Pushing the high ISO settings from the camera, then additionally pushing the sliders in post make for a nice grain in dark areas. It transforms these images in a pleasing way to me. It shows how hard the performers are emoting and working to connect with the listeners.

Arthur Murray Poster Contest Winners – DC Area Photography

Arthur Murray Dance Studios - Columbia, MD - ©TimeLine Media

Last Friday I counted the votes from the first TimeLine Media photo poster contest. On the Facebook page, I posted 6 different posters from the Arthur Murray Fall Showcase. There were so many great shows, and we only have a limited space in which to display photos at the next event. The dancers that present these shows are the capstone to the events, and they look great printed large!

We have been featuring these dancers for a few years now that we have been covering the events. Now, we wanted to reach out to our social network to get input on which of the photos we should print for display. It was fun to see the votes come in and to see the comments from students, other teachers, and their Facebook friends! In the end, there were 2 clear winners for our first contest. The winners were the posters from the Columbia, Maryland studio, and the Tysons Corner, Virginia studio! The other photos will not go to waste, however. We will print the other studios onto event cards that will hopefully remind dancers to come back to the proofing website to view their photos.

Thanks to everyone that voted, and spread the word of upcoming events through their Facebook! We enjoy making these posters, and we hope that more people were able to view them through the sharing. To see the posters in person, we will display them at the Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles coming up March 28 – 29, 2014 at the Marriott Westfields in Chantilly, VA. After the event, the posters will be going to their respective studios. See you on the dance floor!

Weekend Website Updates – Dance Photography Virginia, DC, MD

Bachata Masters - ©TimeLine Media

There are lots of things going on at the website, Facebook page, and offline for TimeLine Media! Monday is the last day to view photos from the Bachata Masters event that was held in Rockville, MD last November 2, 2013. This was a cold night outside, but a hot night of dancing! The bachata and mambo fans were out in force that night, and it made for some great photos.

To add your vote to the mix, go to the Facebook page [ http://www.facebook.com/timelinemedia ] and look through the six photos from each of the studios. The 2 collages that receive the most votes will be printed large and displayed at the upcoming Spring Freestyles event. There are definitely 2 front runners, but I will not count the finally tally until tonight. Share the link to get the most votes for your favorite!

Lastly, I am getting all the gear ready for the Baltimore Dancesport Challenge this weekend. We are excited about getting to see more dancing! The organizers and venue at this event are always photographer friendly. We will be taking more action photos of the dancers as they compete, and for package holders, we will be printing one photo from the day for them to take home! It is something new that we are trying for this year. It was the idea of Marielle Pabon, the owner of the event, and we think it will be a great added value for attendees. Stay tuned to the blog to see how it turns out! See you this weekend –
