The life cycle continues for ballroom dance photos at the TimeLine Media proofing site. There are two events that are expiring tonight, while there are two events that are not yet ready to view! Today is the last day to view photos from the 2013 New Jersey State Open and the 2013 Paragon Open.

Thanks to everyone that has kept the server very busy in the months following these events! I hope you enjoyed looking through all the photos from each. We appreciate the support from you that attended and wanted to keep some of these images for display in your home and on your social networks. If you know of anyone that would like to see these before they are gone, here are the direct links:

Last weekend, we photographed the Arthur Murray 2014 Spring Freestyles, and the River City Ballroom Dance competition. I am working on editing the photos now, and will have a better idea as to when each will be ready. Stay tuned to the blog for ongoing updates on the status of these images. As tired as I am from the weekend, I am boosted by the feedback we received from so many this last weekend. From what I have seen from the Spring Freestyles so far, it looks like another nice collection so far, so I can’t wait to get these out! We worked with some great photographers this last weekend, and I cannot wait to show off what we were able to create with the dancers. More updates coming soon!

This event was another great one for photos. I have posted many times about how much the setup the ballroom at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City works well for our photography. With the size of the ballroom, we have a lot of flexibility on how to light the room. In having 2 events to shoot there annually, the setup is much easier for us now. Having the knowledge of where you want to setup your gear, and where you want to position yourself to shoot, allows me to just concentrate on following the dancers on the floor. Then it is easier to get better photos, and have less “test shots” to go through before they get good!

At last years, NJ State Open, there were some nice exhibition showcases prepared by both amateurs and professionals which added a lot of personality and theatrics to the event. This added some different images from the competitive heats that we see at other competitions. There was also time for some general dancing on Saturday evening, and other non-ballroom dance shows to enjoy. Keep this event in mind for this October and visit the competition website for updates as the dates draw near!

This weekend, TimeLine Media will be covering the DC Area Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles event in Chantilly, VA. There will likely not be any updates on the blog, but I will be posting updates on my Twitter Feed, the Facebook page, and my Instagram Feed when I get the chance. See you on the dance floor!

Flash Sync Speed – Tech Thursday

Outdoor photo with leaf shutter lens - ©TimeLine Media

The last two Tech Thursdays I have posted about the leaf shutter lens built into the FujiFilm X100s, Sony Cybershot DSC-RX1, and some medium format camera systems. They have some special abilities over dSLR cameras when it comes to syncing with flash units. Allowing for a faster sync speed, you create outdoor photos in bright sun while retaining shallow depth of field.

Most hobbyists and professionals use dSLRs for making images. However, they are limited in terms of what shutter speed they can use with flash. Look through the manual that came with your camera to see what the sync speed is with your particular model. Some cameras sync at 1/160th of a second, but the fastest shutter speed I have seen with them is 1/200th of a second.

Feature Comparison

If we were to take outdoor photos as these shutter speeds, we would have to close down the aperture to not let in too much light and overexpose the photo. What would happen if you were to set your camera to a higher shutter speed? These were taken with a Nikon D4, and the flash was a moonlight connected by a PC-Sync cable to the camera. This photo is set at f/5.0 at 1/200th of a second, the flash sync speed of the camera:

The shutter is not open long enough for the flash to cover the entire frame. Eventually the entire frame will be black when the shutter speed is too high like at 1/1000th of a second:

The leaf shutter camera can still do just fine set at f/5.6 at 1/1000th of a second:
