Fairfax, Virginia

Today’s post is from a Clarence Clottey – Studio session for his latest suits. Similarly to his last session outside his office, he modeled all the outfits that he put together. However, this time we met at my studio in Fairfax. Since it has not been that long since we had a shoot, I could really compare the two sessions. Without a doubt, I really enjoyed the control of the lighting. At this time, I used four lights to capture some nice renderings of the suits, and to make a clean white background.

When he put on the white suit, I thought this would have been troublesome against a white background. He wanted to keep the same background as the dark suits, so we gave it a try. Overall, I think these work especially with his dark skin. He does not get lost in the background with some flags used in the studio to keep the lights from flaring back into the camera. I know this sounds very camera-geeky, but I was very happy with the results!

2018 Emmes Headshots

2018 Emmes Headshots

Rockville, Maryland

Last year, I updated some portraits at a 2018 Emmes Headshots session at their Rockville, Maryland office. At this time, they were looking to have some new portraits of some high-performing employees for an upcoming meeting. Although I had a full mobile lighting setup with me, I also brought a hair and makeup artist with me. For the most part, everyone was camera-ready when we met, but a stylist can really make the post processing much faster by smoothing skin with some touch ups.

For headshots, the first thing to remember to keep the face the focus of the image. With this in mind, I needed to work with the client request to have their offices as the background. Luckily, they had a lot of nice candidates for backgrounds when I scouted areas in their building. In the first place, I wanted to find a spot with a clean seamless background. One hallway ended in a nice wall painted a dark blue gray. Overall, it worked nicely for a clean background without any distractions.

The other place I set up the light was in front of a frosted glass conference room wall. Not only was this set specifically in their office, but balancing it with a flash still put the focus on the face. I hope Emmes found these useful, and I thank my wife for the referral!

2019 Tysons Tower

Tysons, Virginia

Last month, I had a Headshot Day event at the Tysons Tower. The idea for this day came from the Macerich and Hines team in Tysons. Above all, they wanted to have me be a part of their programming for the tenants in the building. To that end, I would offer to be setup in a conference room for the day, and anyone who is in the building could sign up for a mini session.

Prior to this day, I had only been in the Tysons Tower a couple of times. Moreover, most of those times were on the penthouse rooftop area. By comparison, this conference was on a couple of floors above the Plaza. When I first arrived, I thought about having an option of having a natural background. However, the setup would not be as flexible. For one thing, the lighting would have to be adjusted for each person. Additionally, I was unsure what the preference would be for those coming by. It would be too difficult to switch between the two. The conference room had plenty of space for my background, and lighting. With this in mind, I thought it would be easier to just use the seamless white background. If someone wanted a different background, that could be done afterwards.
