Family Portraits

It is another beautiful day in the Washington, DC Area. I will be heading out to assist another photographer friend with a wedding today. So this is just a quick post. The nice weather puts people in the mood for photos and getting families together at this time is the perfect time to update family portraits!

With school ending soon, and grand plans being made for the summer and fall, this is a great time to make new photos. A few families have asked me to take their photos at both indoor and outdoor locations. These were taken at a beautiful park in Ashburn, Virginia. There are expecting mothers, high school seniors, and anniversaries coming up where these photos have been presented as gifts, or just hung in the home as a way to show changes in families over the years.

Overall, I consider myself lucky to be able to do this, and I hope to do this more for my own family. I do know a few photographers that I can count on to do a good job – maybe we can exchange! 🙂 Hope you have a great Saturday!

Salsa – Bachata Throwdown

More dance photography is on the schedule for me today. I will be covering the Salsa – Bachata Throwdown this evening in Rockville, Maryland. There are workshops during the day, and performances at night. Judging from the Facebook posts leading up to the event, this should be a fun event to photograph. On this occasion, Kat Arias invited me to cover this event. As can be seen in these photos, she has hired me to photograph events for her previously. Additionally, she asked me to make photos of her and her dancers in the studio. The following are from a session at Union 206 Studio.

Tonight is a showcase of Salsa – Bachata experts in the DC area. Being that this is a popular style, this should be an enthusiastic crowd tonight. Of course I hope to see some familiar faces. In any case, I am sure to pick up more than a few new moves! Check back here for some of my favorites as I edit them next week! Here are some from a studio shoot with some of the dancers that will be there tonight. Enjoy!

Wedding photos – Ruth & Don – part 2

After the ceremony, is where the photographer is front and center. There are the must-have formal photos that need to be taken. With all the family gathered at one place, it is an important milestone in two family’s history. These are the wedding photos that are on the top of the list when asked what the first thing will be salvaged in a fire! At no other time will all these people be assembled at the same time to celebrate a new marriage. For this wedding, I took as many separate groups as I could – from both families together, to just siblings, to immediate families only, to the entire extended family together in one photo.

Bridal Walk – Wedding Photos

When the formals are complete, I can relax a little. The next part is my FAVORITE during a wedding day – a bridal walk with the bride and groom where I can get time alone with them without any other distractions. Lots of brides and grooms like the little break before the reception to recharge. Some of my best images from a wedding can be crafted during these mini sessions. Ruth and Don were very brave going out in the cold to get some photos at a beautiful church in downtown Hershey, PA. This had a beautifully lit cross that I could place in the background – got lucky again!

The bright red doors gave a nice background to the still-hanging Christmas decorations:

Being in Hershey, PA, you can’t get out of town without getting a photo of a kiss underneath a lightpost “Kiss” in the shape of the famous chocolates:

The light was just perfect for photos – a little overcast, and the slight breeze kept the veil out of the way. The passing traffic honked their horns to the bride and groom! Both of them took it in stride – sharing the day with their motorized well-wishers.
