Student Showcase

Last June, I went to Jessup, Maryland to cover the That’s Dancing 2015 Summer Showcase. Marielle and Carlos Pabon have a friendly studio that is supportive of their dancers. In contrast to their Winter Showcase which is at a hotel in Columbia, this event is held at their studio. However, the show is just as entertaining, and the effort put into the performances are not any less fun! To see photos from the show, you can see them at this link:

Staff Showcase

For the last of the 3 acts of the Showcase, the staff of That’s Dancing performs for the audience. Now that they have completed their own performances for the evening, the students are more relaxed to see the grand finale. Especially since they are fresh off of high of dancing in front of their friends and family, they are ready to be inspired by their teachers displaying their skills.

It was a lovely evening to cover the That’s Dancing 2015 Summer Showcase! With attention to keeping a theme for the entire evening, they do a nice job threading the music and routines together. Especially since we cover many dance events, it is nice to hear different music selections, and I keep my phone handy to tag them for practice later! I hope to see the staff and their students at their next showcase soon.

Columbia, Maryland

That’s Dancing Ballroom and Dancesport Center in Jessup, Maryland has an awesome staff that goes to great lengths to give a great experience to their students. This shows in the support they get from their students, and the friends of their studio that come to see their Showcases. I enjoy the effort they put into turning a hotel ballroom into a proper venue for dance performances.

Marielle weaves together a theme throughout each Showcase. Sometimes there will be trivia questions between numbers along that theme. It is a clever way to give time for costume and shoe changes. And it keeps the audience paying attention to what they are watching. It has them perked up to see what the next set of dancers will show them.

These photos are from the final act of the night where the staff and the professional dancers that teach at the studio perform for everyone. It gives inspiration to everyone watching to continue dancing! I’m sure they come back from the Showcases with ideas for their next performance. Even the judges will get in on the dancing.

2014 That’s Dancing Winter Showcase – student routine

Columbia, Maryland

Last December we made another trip to Columbia, Maryland to visit the staff and students from That’s Dancing on their 2014 winter showcase. Carlos and Marielle Pabon have such a supportive dance studio with dancers that really put on a show for their friends and dance family twice a year at their Showcases. Their holiday edition was again a nice display of the work that they put on to display what they have been working on with choreographed pieces that the staff worked on over the last few months.

I really enjoyed these photos both in how they were setup, and the showmanship of the dancers. This style of performance really differs from competition dancing. Here, they have a definite direction which to face to make contact with the audience. With this in mind, they position their best lines towards the crowd. I can also photograph from an elevated position since I am in the best position for most of the performances.

Carlos works to make sure his students look their best in the photos. As a partnership, both dancers are focused on both the audience and their leader or follower at the same time! It is nice to watch as everything comes together for them – the dance that they want to perform to the music that they carefully selected. You can see from the photos that their months of learning the material has paid off, and the audience showed their appreciation throughout the night!
