Triple Swing – Professional Showcase

Arthur Murray - Alxandria, VA - ©TimeLine Media

Who is ready for a triple swing? In reviewing old blog posts, I found that there are still some professional shows that I have not posted about from the Arthur Murray Fall Showcase. There was a large number of shows from this event! To be sure I do not want to leave any of the dancers out! They are too nice to ask when their featured photos will show up. With this in mind I have gone back to make note of which ones I have not blogged yet.

Today’s show was a triple swing performed by the Arthur Murray franchised dance studio in Alexandria, VA. They danced to a popular song at the studios – “Lollipop.” I recall dancing a showcase routine to this a few years ago – it has a quick tempo requiring you to keep steps compact. It is also a challenge to dance at that tempo for the entire length of the song which these two did very well! They even though in a lift in the middle just to up the ante even more. The fun lollipop prop and dress really brought out the whimsical feel of the dance that the audience responded to nicely.

After post this, there are only two other shows from this event that I have not posted on the blog. I am thinking about having a Facebook poll about the photos from each show. We only have a limited space to hang posters from the previous event’s professional shows, so we need to narrow down the candidates soon. Stay tuned here to find out more on how we decide to print these. Thanks!

Nat Geo Kids Club – Petting Zoo at Tysons Corner Center

Well this was one of the cutest photo shoots I have ever covered. The National Geographic Kids Club had a petting zoo visit Tysons Corner Center. To say it was a big hit is an understatement! The small animals from Squeals on Wheels were quite the attraction for everyone visiting the mall. There were kids of all ages that wanted to line up and pet the rabbits, chicks, and piglets.

John and Jill the co-owners of Squeals on Wheels gave an orientation to everyone visiting about how to get up close to the animals. They encouraged everyone to greet and touch the animals – “It’s not a looking zoo, it’s a petting zoo!”

The line to come into the zoo was full the entire time they were open. The amount of people that could see the animals at one time was nicely controlled so that everyone had plenty of time and space to visit. It kept the animals calm as well so they did not have to entertain too many at one time!

Not only were there animals, but there was also talented Face painters and balloon makers. Parents and kids had a great time at the club this afternoon, and I am sure they will be back for more events this year. Go to their website for more information, and I’ll see you at the next one!

Creating Vignettes in Lightroom – Tech Thursday

Wisconsin State Capitol at dusk - ©TimeLine Media

When Adobe Lightroom first came on the scene, it added the ability to create vignettes. I saw many photos with the darkened corners. It was not until I installed the beta of the program that I saw why! This look stems from the technical deficiencies of old cameras. Some larger format cameras or older lenses were not as precise with their ability to transmit light to the edges.

Now, every image editing app from Instagram to Snapseed has a way to purposefully add vignettes to your photos. I saw a demonstration where Parker J. Pfister had extreme uses of vignettes in his photos that brought the darkness in much farther into the frame. Some of the darkening did not even follow a light fall-off pattern that an old lens would produce, but the images were stunning. The reason that this works is that your eye will be attracted to the brightest thing in the frame first.

In most cases, you will want the brightest part of the frame to be your subjects face if you are photographing a person. Sometimes it will be an object in the foreground that you would like to emphasize over the background. Adding a vignette is very easy in the Effects panel of Lightroom 5. After you make your crop, the Post-Crop Vignetting tool is used to darken the corners, and you can set how far into the frame you would like to darken. You can also set how much you would like the vignette to darken, and how dramatic a drop off you want that to happen. Be cautious that you do not over do it! Over darkening of these edges where it becomes too obvious can make it distracting for your viewers taking away from the overall impact of the image.
