If you have recently been to the Tysons Corner Center in McLean, VA, you may have noticed the new HGTV pop-up store that has opened in the Fashion Court near Bloomingdale’s and L.L. Bean. This showroom has many examples of the latest materials and designs for home furnishings featured on their television network.

Inside the store is an array of resources for your home design needs. There are designers available to discuss your specific projects, and they can show you examples of paint, flooring, and lighting right in the store. On Saturday, this was a busy place. Lots of guests came by to feel the materials hanging in the displays, and getting ideas on how to change their interiors.

Just outside the store by the elevator, HGTV has also setup some furniture and displays with their programming. Resting shoppers can be inspired by more of their design choices. They have a nice D.C. autumn backdrop where you can make photo and send to your email with their photo booth!

It is here that designer Taniya Nayak made an appearance to meet fans of her shows. She took lots of time to meet with everyone that waited in line to see her. Some brought pictures of their on-going projects to get ideas. With each one that came by, she took lots of time to meet, sign autographs, and give her design advice.

It was a pleasure to meet her and the staff that worked at the pop-up showroom. If you are in the middle of a home design project, you should definitely stop by before November 8. The store will then move on from this location, so take advantage of the opportunity before then!

Great Gatsby Gala – Tech Thursday

©TimeLine Media - poster base image

Time really flies! Today is the Great Gatsby Gala at the Arthur Murray – Tysons Corner, VA studio. A few months ago, I asked the staff if they would like to create a poster to advertise the theme of the party. This was back in the summer when the new Great Gatsby movie was still in theaters. In a few posts, I showed some of the steps that went into making the poster. One aspect that I used in the poster but did not blog about was the use of layers to place the portraits into one image.

Movie Poster

In the poster, the portraits were cut out very close to the edges of each person’s form. This will not work, though, for most action photos taken of dancers on the dance floor. If you have seen us at events, you probably have seen some posters that I have created with these shots, and I do them a little differently. In this example, I start with a large base image that I changed to black and white since it will be the background for the whole poster.

Next, I take another image, and overlay it right on top of this one. Automatically, Photoshop will put this on a new layer:

I then add a layer mask to this new layer. The default for the mask is to be completely white meaning the entire layer is in view. Then, I select the layer mask, and choose a black brush with hardness turned down to 0%, and brush black onto the layer mask which removes the edges from the color image:

Here is a look at the final layer toolbar when all the images, layer masks, and edits are added:

And finally, here is the example poster created with these edits. It contains 3 images from this show, 2 layer masks that blend the color images over the monochrome background image, and some text with the song name. It is a different way to combine multiple images into one setting. The result is a little more organic or free-flowing compared to hard edges. Both will work!

Whitney and Austin from Chevy Chase are on the blog today. This post is a last reminder from the blog about the sale ending on the DC Area Arthur Murray 2013 Fall Freestyles. Overall there have been lots of visits to the website! We are especially appreciative of those that have placed orders. To take advantage of the 20% off sale on all products, you need to place the order by today at the proofing site here:

The photos will still be available on the website to view and purchase prints until next January, so you still have plenty of time to view photos. The only thing that will change is the pricing for orders. All the photos are organized by studio. We did our best to organize them correctly, but if there are any errors, please let me know.Below are some of my favorite images from the professional show by the Chevy Chase, MD studio. Enjoy!

In reviewing the photos from the pro shows, I got lucky in my lighting setup. At this time, the curtains from the wall mirrors were open. On account of the direct reflection from my flashes, I usually do not like to have them open. Because of the flare from the lights, I know that I will have to throw some images away. Thankfully, I did not have to do it because of my low angle from the floor! Check out the site to see the other images from this show.
