Shooting From the Hip – Tech Thursday

Family Get Together

It has been about a week since my last posting – I have not fallen off the face of the Earth! We took an extended weekend to attend a wedding out of town. Of course, I took my camera with me. Now I have a whole slew of images that will make it on the blog soon. Today, though, I want to go back to a family get together to describe a looser, or a freer way of shooting to get a different style of images.

This late afternoon was very warm outside. What better way to cool off, than to play with some water guns? The ammo is unlimited, and everyone is a friendly target! This was a perfect time to try a specific technique for photographing kids that I have seen a few times but have not tried myself. First thing to consider – my professional camera bodies are weather-sealed at all of the openings. The connection between the lens and the lens mount is covered by a piece of rubber. This will keep the opening sealed for light water exposure. I have photographed with this camera and lens combination in the rain while covering a football game with no problems. I keep a towel handy, and would stop if there is a chance that much more water will be close.

Knowing that I my camera could stand the water from the guns, I set the camera to a manual exposure so that the settings would not have to change as I fired off frames, and I had the shutter speed set high enough to ensure there would not be blurred photos while running. I had my nephew chase me and shoot at me with his water gun while I ran backwards with my camera pointing towards him. It was easy to get some neat shots of the water coming right towards the camera!

Be prepared to delete a lot of photos when you shoot this way. Lots of times, the composition was not perfect, and sometimes I would miss him completely, but so many of these came out nice. I do not think I could have composed these spontaneous images with my head behind the camera, and directing the scene. Sometimes, you have to just let that control go, and hope for the best. It’s just like having fun – you cannot plan every detail, but you may have better results than you planned!

Photo Event Updates

Bethesda, Maryland

There are two big deadlines to the proofing website that I want to post here. Today is the last day for you to view and purchase photos from the USA Dance 2014 Mid-Atlantic Championships. This was the first big ballroom dance event that we covered this year. Moreover it was a great success for both the dancers, and for us as photographers! The web server has been very busy sending out images from this event since February’s release, to last weekend. After today, the photos will be removed from the server to make room for new events. Here is the direct link to the images:

The other deadline for today is the ending early-bird sale for the DC Area Arthur Murray 2014 Spring Showcase. There were some great routines in both the Smooth and Rhythm rooms, and we have photos from each of them at the website. There have been a few of you that have been designing albums from this event combining them with photos from the Spring Freestyles. If you did not know already, we can make albums of your photos, and you can use any image from events that we cover to be added to the book! Here is the link to the images from this event:

Thanks to everyone that has visited the website this year to view their images! It has been fun to see them going around the social networks. We try our best to have the best ballroom dance photos, and we love to see such nice comments when posted online. Please pass along the links to the events to any of your friends that attended and have not yet seen their images. I really would like people to at least see all their hard work that they put into dance preserved in our collections. We are set to make more soon, and will have a lot more to share here on the blog.

His Dream of Lions – Music Photography

Tysons Corner Center

Photographing musicians while they are performing is one of the most dynamic subjects you can put in front of your lens. In this shoot at Tysons Corner Center, they transformed an open area into a stage where 4 different bands competed. The prize for the competition was to be the opening act for the grand opening of an outdoor space in Tysons Corner later this summer! The bands were diverse in their looks and musical styles making for a great showcase of their talents.

The first band that performed was His Dream of Lions from Fairfax, VA. It can be tough to be the first act out of the gate, but it was no problem for them! They really brought the sound and energy that was needed to get the crowd into the show. For the shoot, I first concentrated on getting photos of the whole group as they performed to show how they arranged themselves on stage, and how they looked from an audience-member perspective.

Battle of the Bands

Once I had a few of those, I changed to a longer lens to get in closer. The lead singer was really giving a great performance. As a band’s front man, you really need to be comfortable in the spotlight, and emote enthusiasm and excitement to the people watching. He was definitely playing to the audience and produced some awesome energy for the crowd.

Once all the settings are dialed into the camera, it is just tracking, and waiting for the right moment to release the shutter. Capturing moments that try to tell the story of the performance takes a little patience. Even though they would only play for one song,  you still cannot motor drive with the camera. That only makes for more work later. Wait until the right moment when you will see some dynamic action from the performers, and they will deliver! It was a great start to the show.
