Fairfax Corner – Christmas Tree Lighting

Last September, I covered a fashion show at Fairfax Corner where a runway was setup right in middle of their main square. I returned to cover their annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony in the same space. The weather was a LOT colder, but again, it fit with the theme of the event. Even without the special events going on, Fairfax Corner is an especially beautiful area to eat, and shop. With the sun setting earlier this time of year, I arrived early to get some photos of the streets and buildings before the sky went completely dark. With their holiday lights hung on the trees at this time, they light up the sidewalks nicely for visitors.

The organizers had lots of activities for the families to enjoy throughout the evening. Santa was scheduled to arrive by horse-drawn carriage on this occasion. With help from 97.1 WASH-FM, there was Christmas music playing throughout the plaza, and stores had giveaways and games for the kids to play. Santa was of course the main attraction – riding around the square, announcing the countdown to the tree lighting, and visiting with kids eager to share their wish lists.

After the lighting, anyone could line up to get a horse carriage ride on both sides of the center. The lines were long all evening long! The evening looked to be a success – with lots of people participating at all the stations. It was a nice way to start the holiday season of photos!

New Camera – Part 1

©TimeLine Media - X100s in low light

The photos are coming along from last weekend nicely! It is a privilege to see all the routines from the day even though it is impossible to see them all because of the two ballrooms. I think my associate photographers did a good job covering the event for you, and I am working quickly to get these done and on the website.

Camera Testing

For today’s post, I wanted to write about a new camera that I have started to use. I have a full compliment of bodies, lenses, and accessories for my Nikon DSLRs, but it became apparent during the summer walkabouts, that it is simply too heavy to carry around all day. A fatigued photographer is a compromised photographer, and there will likely be some photos that you will miss. In researching a suitable substitute for all that gear, I found the Fujifilm X100s.

This is one of the new large-sensor mirrorless cameras that has been released in the last 2 years. This class of cameras is becoming very popular because of the lightweight bodies, and superior image quality. The camera has a fixed focal length 23mm lens which translates to 35mm on a full-frame sensor. The aperture of this lens can open to f/2 allowing excellent low light performance. Using these technical specs, I decided that this would probably suit just fine as a substitute for my “big” cameras. After it arrived, I had to hop on a learning curve, that will be a long run to being comfortable.

Portrait Photography

Before I went into the more complicated features, I started at the basics. The first thing I noticed, is the weight – this camera is so light! It was much lighter than I expected, but the ergonomics makes it really easy to hand hold. The rangefinder-like viewfinder is HUGE making composing photos very easy. The lens on this camera is tack sharp even at f/2. The above photo was taken wide open with just overhead lights. With the large aperture, I could still get a sharp photo at ISO 400. I was happy with how it performed, but with my first shoot, it was clear that this was clearly not the same system I have been used to.

Fall Showcase Editing

Tysons, Virginia

My feet, and back are sore, and I didn’t even dance one heat yesterday! It was a long day at the Arthur Murray Fall Showcase, but we did make lots of photos of all the routines and the All-Around competition. The dancers are starting to recover, and I have started editing the photos so that we can share them with you this weekend. We really enjoyed catching up with dancers from other studios! We appreciate all the nice feedback we received from those of you that ordered pictures and digital downloads from us. It is really nice to hear how you are displaying your photos, and showing them off to your friends.

Again we were treated to some awesome professional shows to end the evening. I have not even looked at the photos from last night, but I thought I would share some from the Fall Freestyles that have not been posted on the blog yet. This was a Cha Cha by Brandon and Carolina from Arthur Murray – Columbia.

These two put on some of the most entertaining shows! They really engage with the audience with their technical and sharp lines. Overall, it makes editing their photos an enjoyable job! Last night, they each had different partners for their professional shows which I am sure will be featured in the blog as soon as I can get them finished.

Stay tuned here and on the TimeLine Media Facebook page for updates on when all the photos will be done and ready on the proofing site. We will be taking Thursday off for eating and football, but I still plan to have them done by Saturday. Thank you!
